49ers sign Bay Area native, defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko to practice squad originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
As the 49ers' defensive front remains ravaged by injuries, San Francisco is bringing a familiar face back.
The 49ers have re-signed defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko Jr. to the practice squad, the team announced on Tuesday.
Fehoko worked out with the 49ers on Aug. 23 before signing with the practice squad on Sept. 23 and being upgraded to the active roster on Sept. 26. The 26-year-old played in his first NFL game against the Arizona Cardinals the following day, logging 13 snaps but recording no stats.
On Oct. 3, the 49ers waived Fehoko to make room for defensive lineman Sebastian Valdez but now have room for both.
Fehoko, a Bay Area native, attended Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, going on to play five years at San Jose State.
He earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honors as a redshirt junior in 2022, leading the Mountain West Conference in tackles for loss with 19, before getting drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Fehoko was waived by the Cowboys because of an injury, and spent time with the Washington Commanders and Indianapolis Colts before working out with San Francisco earlier this year.
Fehoko also is the second cousin of Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vita Vea.
After bringing Fehoko back to the practice squad, the 49ers are hopeful he will be able to provide depth as the defensive line recovers.
