Defensive end Quincy Rhodes is the bona fide NFL draft prospect who returned for his senior year, but rising junior Bradley Shaw has left an impression on Roberts.
The mike linebacker recorded 50 tackles with two sacks and a forced fumble in 2025. Those numbers figure to rise this fall with Shaw stepping into the starting defense. He has been wearing the green dot at practice, meaning he will receive the play calls from Roberts and share them with the rest of the defense, and Shaw has trimmed his weight from 240 to 227 while not losing much strength.

"I'm not saying he can't be dethroned, but I would say right now it's probably Bradley Shaw's football team and it's his job to lead," Roberts said.
Roberts praised the former four-star prospect's football IQ and work ethic. The rest of the linebacker rotation is unsettled, but Shaw is the clear No. 1.
Missed tackles were a huge factor in losses toMemphisand Mississippi State last year. Roberts cited some practice stats that provide some optimismArkansaswill be better at bringing opponents to the ground in 2026.
During a recent scrimmage that was roughly 100 plays, Roberts said his defense missed 10 tackles. He wants that number to drop to single digits on Saturdays in the fall, but it's a good start for a hopeful turnaround.

"I'm happy with our growth, but we ain't done. We got work to do. They know that, you can't pat yourself on the back," Roberts said.
Four cornerbacks earning trust
Tulane transfer Jahiem Johnson is a lock to be one of the starting cornerbacks. Roberts said that La'khi Roland (Maryland) and Shelton Lewis (Clemson) are the top-two candidates to be the other starter based off their spring practices.
But Roberts also raved about DJ Hairston Jr., who is a rising sophomore from Hinds Community College in Mississippi.
"I feel very comfortable with (Hairston) being in the two-deep," Roberts said. "I think he's earned his — got to keep doing it — but right now, he's earned his way and the respect that he's capable of going out there and playing against the big people."

The other name to know at the position is Braydon Lee (Maryland), who is dealing with a high ankle sprain and has missed the past eight practices.
Two freshmen demanding snaps
Safety Tay Lockett and defensive tackle Danny Beale III have consistently worked with the second-team defense throughout the spring. Roberts explained that both players have traits that make them capable of playing in the SEC in their first years on campus.
Lockett's IQ stands out among the freshmen. He's able to pick up the variety of defenses in Roberts' playbook and has adjusted to the speed of the game. In a recent practice, Lockett interceptedKJ Jacksonand returned the pass for a touchdown. He's also been working as a punt returner, which shows he is a playmaker with the ball in his hands.

Beale has shown a strong work ethic, but his sheer size is the biggest separator. At 6-foot-5 and 348 pounds, he's already one of the biggest players on the roster. That weight and strength could come in handy against interior linemen in the conference.
"With (Beale), we kind of threw him into the fire early. Just like, we're going to baptize him, you know what I mean? Throw him in and let's go. We're going to live with it and teach him on the ropes," Roberts said.
Defensive linemen will be dropping back in pass coverage
This is no secret if fans turn on the film from Roberts' previous stops, but he confirmed his JACK linebacker and even some of the other defensive linemen like Quincy Rhodes will need to be comfortable dropping back into a zone coverage.

Roberts explained that the wrinkle is actually based out of a desire to stop the run. If the offense is in a running formation but decides to pass againstArkansas' five-man front, one of the Hogs' linemen must contribute as a pass defender.
