The mention of Spencer Dinwiddie 's name will not elicit much excitement from today's NBA fans. After all, he was a 6'5″ combo guard who was picked in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft and didn't see much of the floor during his first years with the Detroit Pistons.
Dinwiddie eventually got his chance to showcase the true depth of his skills with the Brooklyn Nets; he even averaged a career-high 20.6 points per game during the 2019-20 season.
From there, he bounced from one team to another, providing steady offense and playmaking. Before long, he had amassed a whopping $93,909,497 in career earnings — a nice haul for a second-rounder.
While Dinwiddie wasn't big on flexing his wealth, he had nice taste, as evidenced by two frivolous purchases, including an ultra-rare car that takes nearly a year to build by hand.
Dinwiddie's unique taste in cars
NBA stars and luxury cars often go hand in hand, with players typically buying vehicles from name brands like Mercedes-Benz, Bentley, Bugatti, Porsche and Rolls-Royce, to mention a few. In fact, J.R. Smith and Jason Terry admitted to blowing the championship checks on a Ferrari F12 and a Bentley Continental GT, respectively.
Dinwiddie, though, took a different route when it came to buying the car of his dreams, opting for a Swedish car manufacturer less popular in the United States: Koenigsegg Automotive AB. Not long after signing the biggest contract of his career — a three-year deal worth $54,000,000 — Dinwiddie set his sights on acquiring one of the rarest automobiles in the world: the $1.7 million Koenigsegg Gemera Mega GT.
"It's the first Mega GT. So it's a four-seater hypercar. It has, I believe, 2,000 combined horsepower," Dinwiddie revealed . "It's the first four-seater hypercar. They call it a Mega GT."
Purchasing such a vehicle, though, according to Dinwiddie, isn't as easy as heading to a dealership, picking a car, and driving it away from the lot.
"So with those boutique-type cars, like, first you buy a slot, then you put down the 50 percent deposit, and they make it for you," he explained.
Dinwiddie also got the "Black Panther"
Aside from ultra-rare cars, Dinwiddie apparently also has a thing for acquiring limited-edition timepieces. And he recalled buying the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept "Black Panther" Flying Tourbillon – a luxury watch produced through a collaboration between AP and Marvel.
Dinwiddie reasoned that he needed one because his second-favorite superhero is the Black Panther and his favorite color is purple.
"Oh, wait, wait. You mean the Audemars Piguet Black Panther version? They never heard of that. Never knew, but nice," Quentin Richardson quipped, the awe apparent in his tone.
As mentioned, Dinwiddie wasn't as flashy as the likes of Shaquille O'Neal and LaMelo Ball, who never hesitated to flaunt their bank accounts through the cars they had. He was low-key with it, but still impressive in his selections.
