Welcome back to our countdown to the 2026 Iowa football season!
Since May 28, we've been counting down the final 100 days until the Hawkeyes swarm out of the Kinnick Stadium tunnel for their season opener against Northern Illinois on Sept. 5 .

Each day of the countdown has primarily featured an article profiling one of the current members of the 2026 Hawkeyes based on their jersey number. Loyal readers already know this by now, but if you're hurrying to catch your football fix, this is how this works: if a player wears No. 7 and we're seven days until kickoff, that's the player that will appear on the countdown.
We've had to mix things up with innovative pieces on days that a current Hawkeye doesn't wear the number that fits the countdown, but that's not going to be a problem since we're under a week to go until the opener.
Today marks just six days until kickoff, so that means it's time to take a look at a pretty talented player who wears No. 6 - defensive back Zach Lutmer .
You probably know him already, but in case you don't get to know him here.

Other notable players to wear No. 6:A recognizable name to wear No. 6 is a very fitting one for the Lutmer piece - Tim Dwight. All Hawkeye fans young and old have definitely heard of Dwight's name in the past because he was one of the most electric playmakers in Iowa history. Dwight was best known for his work on special teams, and he left the Hawkeyes with Big Ten records in punt return yardage (1,102) and punt return touchdowns (5).
Lutmer's Career So Far
Few, if any, defensive players have garnered more praise than Lutmer this offseason. Like most star defensive talent to roll through Iowa City, Lutmer had to wait his turn to get on the field, but once he did get on the field, he became one of Iowa's best defenders.

After playing in all 13 games in 2024, Lutmer started every game at the cash position (Iowa's hybrid linebacker/cornerback position) in 2025. He was a strong performer throughout the year, but he really turned it on in October, where he collected his first career touchdown on a pick-six against Minnesota .
Lutmer finished the 2025 campaign with 71 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and three interceptions, and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors from the league's coaches.
2026 figures to be even better for Lutmer. He now has the starting experience and confidence to be a major player in what figures to be a very young secondary this year, and opposing quarterbacks probably won't be throwing to him very often.
Another reason why Lutmer is such a huge part of this Iowa defense is because of his versatility. He can play cash, cornerback, and safety, and that versatility could be crucial as defensive coordinator Phil Parker tries to figure out his Week 1 lineup.

Kirk Ferentz revealed on Aug. 26 that Tyler Brown's injury will likely force Lutmer to move to safety for the opener, but Lutmer told us at Big Ten Media Days that he is ready to play whatever position he can.
All he wants to do is win football games, and the Hawkeyes have a good chance of doing just that if Lutmer stays healthy.
