The Philadelphia 76ers have been trusting the process for years, but they still have not advanced past the second round of the playoffs. They suffered an embarrassing sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks after getting obliterated by 30 points in Game 4 on Sunday.
Now, the 76ers will enter another offseason filled with uncertainties, especially regarding Joel Embiid , who had another injury-riddled campaign. Coach Nick Nurse could also be in the hot seat after just three seasons.
According to a report from The Athletic’s Tony Jones, tension has been simmering between the players and the coaches, noting that the case for Nurse’s tenure is “similarly mixed.”
“On April 1, the same day as Embiid’s social media post, a handful of players met with members of Philadelphia ’s coaching staff before shootaround in Washington to express concern over certain players’ participation in team activities and frustration over the direction of the 76ers’ season, multiple league sources told The Athletic,” wrote Jones.
He was referring to Embiid expressing his frustration on X after he was not allowed to suit up against the Washington Wizards , even though he said he was good to go.
“Among other things, the players expressed they felt there wasn’t enough control of the locker room, according to those sources. The meeting was tense enough to briefly imperil the team’s shootaround. However, the conversation resolved enough that the activity was able to proceed as planned,” added Jones.
The 76ers won that game against the Wizards, but they finished the campaign with a 3-3 record.
Things looked up for the Sixers after they completed a stunning comeback from a 3-1 deficit against the Boston Celtics in the first round. They, however, failed to sustain their success against the Knicks.
Philadelphia looked good when Embiid was sidelined at different points of the season, with Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe leading a high-octane offense.
Embiid, who claimed that the season was still a success , only played 38 games. The 76ers also navigated the 25-game suspension of Paul George for violating the league’s anti-drug policy.
The coming days will be critical for Philadelphia, to say the least.
