Sam Rines was one of the AAU coaches who witnessed the unbelievable qualities of a young Kobe Bryant
. He often met with Bryant at the Bellevue Hotel sports club in Philadelphia
to enjoy a front-row seat to how the teenager took on NBA players.
Coach Rines was also there when the Lower Merion standout went toe-to-toe with aging NBA veteran Vernon Maxwell
. As far back as Rines could remember, it was a highly competitive one-on-one game in which Max got the better of Kobe.

"One day, he matches up with Vernon Maxwell,"
Rines recalled
via Los Angeles Magazine. "Vernon had gotten released by the Rockets that year; he was on his way out of the league, so I'm thinking Kobe's going to kill him. No, it was the opposite way around."
"Kobe couldn't do nothin' with him because Vernon was shooting from half court and not missing,"
he continued.
It got personal between Max and Bean
Those who knew "Mad Max" knew that he was a player whose reputation for defensive tenacity and a hair-trigger temper was well-earned in the NBA trenches. According to Rines, the atmosphere shifted the moment Maxwell and Bryant stepped onto the hardwood.

Rines knew Kobe as a stoic assassin, a kid who let his game do the talking. However, Max had a surgical way of getting under his opponent's skin. Rines noted that while he had almost never seen Kobe engage in verbal warfare, Maxwell managed to drag a different beast out of the young prodigy.
Maxwell's constant chirping and physical play forced Kobe to break his silence, sparking a back-and-forth. At that point, Rines knew it had gone "personal," especially for Bryant.
"And Vernon took the challenge personally, telling him, 'You can't mess with me, young boy!' And Kobe came back at him like, 'You're going out of the league, old man." I'd never heard Kobe trash talk like that,'"
Rines vividly remembered. "He took it personal."

"One time, I teased him about it and I swear he stopped talking to me for a couple of weeks. [Laughs] Like a couple of tournaments he wouldn't even talk to me because I teased him about Vernon Maxwell giving him words down at the Bellevue,"
he continued. "And that's Kobe."

Max knew Kobe was NBA-ready
At the time, Maxwell was already a two-time NBA champion who had guarded the likes of Michael Jordan. He came into the gym expecting to school a talented high schooler
.

However, Max admitted that it wasn't really the case.
Maxwell had a moment of clarity. He realized he wasn't just playing against just another hyped prospect. He could tell that Kobe was NBA-ready.
"That's when I told Kobe Bean Bryant. I said, 'Kobe, I want to tell you something, son. Man, don't you touch no college fork. You ready man. I'm one of the better defenders in this motherf—er and the way you did me today, man. I know I play. Come on and get your money,"
Max remembered telling the teenage Bryant.

Knowing Bryant's confidence, he did what Maxwell wanted him to do. He famously skipped college and jumped straight into the pros.
The Los Angeles Lakers
traded for Kobe, who was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets
as the 13th overall pick. The rest, as they say, is history.
