- How the New ABS Challenge System Is Already Changing Fantasy Baseball in 2026
Overreaction runs rampant in fantasy baseball in early April. When a player hits 2 HR in a game, he is the next coming of Babe Ruth. A sparsely-known pitcher spins a beautiful outing and he has multiple Cy Young potential.
Knowing this, it is never too early to talk about the ABS system in Major League Baseball
, what impact it is having, and what impact it will have on fantasy baseball in 2026.
The ABS Challenge System already is changing baseball
on the margins, literally and figuratively. The strike zone is a little tighter than it was last season, catchers are getting less help in their pitch framing efforts and the new system is making more calls fair.
But what does that mean for fantasy baseball? The stats we care about and monitor — specifically, strikeouts, walks, chase rate, K/BB, and OBP — are the ones most likely to be affected. And, if there are measurable changes there, player evaluation will skew in favor of command pitchers and hitters with good-to-great plate discipline.

The ABS Challenge System is tightening the edges of the strike zone. We are seeing fewer borderline pitches being called strikes and, in time, umpires will be less frequently known as "pitcher-friendly" since they will be held to the same standards.
As teams challenge borderline calls, the strike zone will become more literal and open to less interpretation by umpires. Certain umpires are already being exposed for inconsistent strike zone calls, but we will leave that to other articles.
Catchers, at least for now, are losing some of their pitch framing advantages they may possess. As teams move towards late-inning challenges and reversing obvious ball-strike errors early in games, pitch framing in the opening innings of a game will again become important.

Early Data on Called Strikes and Walk Rates
After only a week, we see one big change. Teams are averaging about 3.7 walks per game
this season, up from 3.1 over the 2025 season. It would be silly to assume this entire difference is an ABS side effect, but we can't dismiss it either.
Strikeouts are taking place about 22.1 percent of the time
, about on par with 2025.
What this tells us is that major league umpires are becoming hesitant to call borderline strikes, particularly those with a lot of movement. (Again, we can discuss pitch framing, but as mentioned above, once clubs stop challenging early-inning ball/strike calls, a catcher's framing will regain importance.)
Without getting too into the weeds on this point, MLB
switched methods of measuring the strike zone for ABS. The system uses a player's height, regardless of his batting stance, to measure the zone and measures a pitch on the midpoint of home plate
. As a result, the strike zone overall has been reduced by about 11 percent from previous seasons. Walks being up between 15 and 19 percent, with a smaller zone and umpires showing more discretion — makes a lot of sense.
Fantasy Baseball Winners and Losers Under the New ABS Challenge
Players Benefiting or Hurting Most
It's much too early to say which specific players are helped or hurt by ABS. Obviously closers could have individual games flipped, both positively and negatively, by ABS overturns, but those will be too unpredictable to register any reasonable guesses.
Instead, fantasy baseball owners should focus on hitters who have a good command of the strike zone and pitchers with good control and location as those who could see gains from the system.

The ABS system might help those who play in OBP leagues to benefit from hitters who have a strong knowledge of the strike zone, particularly with umpires becoming more stingy in strike calling.
Obviously, Juan Soto
, Aaron Judge
and Corbin Carroll fit this description, but let's look at players on other tiers to find where you could get a measurable advantage.
Luis Arraez
is among the most consistent high-contact and low strikeout hitters in the league. Because he doesn't leave his fate to an umpire's whims, he stands to gain more walks and hittable pitches.
Similarly, Steven Kwan owns a low swing-and-miss and high contact rate, so he'll be able to focus on a more exact strike zone and reducing softer put-outs.
Nico Hoerner last season owned a 9.4 walk rate, 21.9 strikeout percentage and an 82.3 contact rate. With strong contact and judgment, he and his new contract extension could thrive in a new ball-and-strike environment.
One of the league's best contact hitters, Yandy Diaz owns a strong OBP base, ideal for a system where borderline low strikes are more likely to be called balls. Last season he walked more than 13 percent of the time and struck out about 17 percent.
Other names to consider: Brent Rooker, Nathaniel Lowe, Rhys Hoskins, and Xander Bogaerts.

Think about pitchers who rely on location over stuff, such as George Kirby, as those who could see ABS gains.
Names to consider in this cohort, besides Kirby: Brady Singer, Aaron Civale, Bailey Ober, Tanner Bibee, Rhett Lowder, Drew Rasmussen and Davis Martin.
Search for pitchers who have high Location+ scores and bid an extra buck for them on the waiver wire.
Long-Term Implications of the 2026 ABS Challenge System
What Managers Should Monitor
While it has only been a week, plus spring training, we are seeing real-world effects of the ABS system on baseball. Walks should continue to increase over previous seasons. Strikeouts should remain about even, but keep an eye on that trend. Chase rates could be affected as well. With fewer "wild" calls on the lower part of the zone and the corners, chase rates could well decrease.
We know that MLB is a data-rich league and the ABS System has given us a treasure trove of new data points to assess.
Fantasy owners should research plate discipline measures and strike zone trends to determine long-term effects of the new system on player performance.
