When an NFL tight end's Pro Football Reference page pops up, the usual statistic that shows first on the screen is catches.
For Cameron Latu , it is defense and fumbles.
Latu, a well-traveled former third-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers , was one of two successful waiver claims made by the New England Patriots on Monday.
The other was linebacker Darius Muasau , according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Latu was drafted in 2023. The 6-foot-5, 244-pound Alabama product was injured and released in 2024, then spent time on the Browns practice squad.
Cracking the lineup in Philly
His only NFL experience came in 2025 when he played 15 games for the Philadelphia Eagles with two starts.
Last year, he played 103 offensive snaps (11 percent) and 257 special teams snaps (65 percent) for Philly.
The Eagles waived Latu, who projects as a third (blocking) tight end and special-teamer, over the weekend. While no corresponding move has yet been announced, New England must clear one more spot on the active roster.
Close-up look for Patriots
Clearly, New England got plenty of film and looks at Latu in training camp when the Eagles came to Foxborough for two days of joint practices and an exhibition game.
Latu did catch the one target he saw in that one for 14 yards.

Patriots make linebacker swap
Drafted in the sixth round of the 2024 draft by the New York Giants , Muasau has played in 27 games with 18 starts at linebacker.
At 6-foot, 234 pounds, he is an off-ball type, who projects inside.
To make room on the roster, New England released veteran K.J. Britt .
Muasau will join Robert Spillane , Christian Ellis and youngsters Namdi Obiazor and Khalil Jacobs at the position.
Punter on practice squad
In one other reported move, the Patriots will apparently sign ex-Bills punter Mitch Wishnowsky to the practice squad.
Wishnowsky will fill in until the injured Bryce Baringer returns from injury.
Wishnowsky spent his first six pro seasons with the Niners before spending 2025 in Buffalo.
Baringer was pulled from the second preseason game and has not been on the field in action since.
