The Los Angeles Rams picking Ty Simpson No. 13 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft was one of the most controversial selections made in the first round. Many believed the club would focus on a "win-now" type of player, but instead opted for the quarterback of the future. On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter shared a claim that makes the decision seem even bolder than before.
During a guest appearance on "UnSportsmanLike," Schefter stated that if the Rams did not select the former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback with the No. 13 pick, there was a strong chance Simpson would have fallen out of the first round . He believes that the Arizona Cardinals could have been the team to select him early in round two.
"I was surprised [the Rams picked Simpson] when I found out Thursday, yes," said Schefter. "I basically thought he would have been picked No. 29… No. 13 was a little rich… Ty Simpson probably wasn't gonna go anywhere up top to anybody other than the Rams, who decided to make that selection.
"If the Rams had not chosen Ty Simpson at that spot, I am not convinced he would have gone in the first round," continued Schefter. "I am not convinced. We'll never know for sure. But my sense is he wouldn't have. We'll see. I think he would have been a very early round two, possibly Arizona at No. 34."
We'll never know how things would have played out had the Rams chosen someone other than Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick. But this does add a little fuel to the initial rumors swirling around head coach Sean McVay , who appeared unenthusiastic about the selection on Thursday.
At the end of the day, the Rams have their next quarterback rostered for whenever Matthew Stafford decides to retire. Ty Simpson joins Los Angeles after playing as the starting quarterback for one season at Alabama. He ended the 2025-26 campaign with 3,567 passing yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 64.5% of his pass attempts.
