The St. Louis Cardinals — more specifically their fans — were recently called out by a Barstool Sports show. One of the hosts had a problem with Cardinals fans calling themselves the best fans in baseball, which the host claims is something they do. Three-time All-Star and one of the best pitchers in Cardinals franchise history, Adam Wainwright , heard what was said and decided to respond in a video on social media.
"I don't usually respond to videos about hating on the Cardinals and fans and these kinds of things… If you're from a different fanbase, you're never gonna love another fandom or a team the same way you love your own team, so I get it," Wainwright said. "This guy is taking it a step too far. Look, I know you run a show, Barstool, I know you guys gotta create some story headlines and you love when there's drama… But you know, it's kind of ridiculous… I played there for 18 years, whatever you think in this Barstool world that you live in over there, Braves fans, I grew up a Braves fan, too, and I can respect lots of different organizations. You guys don't know the (Cardinals) fanbase better than I do, I don't care what you say.
"… I played there for 18 years, I am still a huge fan of the organization. Cardinals fans are not walking around saying, 'We're the best fans in baseball.' Cardinals fans got that label because they are the best fans in baseball. I played everywhere, they are."
Wainwright continued by explaining how great the fans are in St. Louis. He even said it can be "frustrating" because the fans will sometimes cheer for the other team if they make a great play. He gave other examples of why Cardinals fans are tremendous as well. Wainwright also defended the Cardinals' stadium.
Wainwright still appreciates the Cardinals even after retiring a few years ago. Additionally, Wainwright has worked as an analyst since retiring , so he has often shared takes about teams around the league. He respects fanbases around the game, but the former pitcher is not shy about defending his former ball club's fans.
