With NFL training camps set to open later this month, the AFC North once again appears to be one of the league's deepest and most competitive divisions. Every team enters camp facing a defining storyline, from first-year head coaches and revamped defenses to quarterback health and championship expectations.
Here's the biggest offseason takeaway for each AFC North franchise as preparations begin for the 2026 season.

Baltimore Ravens : A New Era Begins Under Jesse Minter
For the first time in nearly two decades, the Ravens will take the field without John Harbaugh leading the organization. Instead, all eyes will be on first-year head coach Jesse Minter, who inherits one of the NFL's most talented rosters but also one of its highest expectations.
The Ravens remain built around two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson , whose contract extension remains one of the league's biggest offseason storylines despite being under contract through 2027. Baltimore's championship aspirations, however, may ultimately depend on whether Minter can quickly establish his culture while maintaining the consistency that made the franchise a perennial contender.
Defensively, Baltimore made significant investments after a disappointing 2025 campaign. The additions of edge rusher Trey Hendrickson and veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell , along with the expected return of Nnamdi Madubuike from injury, give the Ravens renewed optimism that their defense can once again become one of the NFL's elite units.

Training camp will center on how quickly Minter adapts to his first NFL head coaching job and whether Baltimore's revamped defense can return to championship form. The Ravens remain one of the AFC's most talented teams, but this season also marks the beginning of an entirely new chapter for the organization.
Cincinnati Bengals : Has the Defense Finally Caught Up to the Offense?
For years, the Bengals have possessed one of football's most dangerous offenses whenever Joe Burrow has been healthy. This offseason, Cincinnati shifted its focus toward fixing the other side of the ball.
General manager Duke Tobin aggressively rebuilt the defense, highlighted by the acquisition of All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and free-agent additions Jonathan Allen , Boye Mafe , Bryan Cook and Kyle Dugger . On paper, the Bengals have assembled one of their most talented defensive units since their Super Bowl run.

Still, everything ultimately hinges on Burrow's availability. Injuries have limited the franchise quarterback in multiple recent seasons, preventing Cincinnati from reaching its full potential despite elite offensive weapons such as Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins .
The pressure also falls squarely on head coach Zac Taylor. After missing the postseason for three consecutive years, expectations have never been higher. With an improved defense and a healthy Burrow, Cincinnati enters training camp believing it has the roster necessary to compete for both the AFC North title and a Super Bowl berth.
Cleveland Browns : Todd Monken Begins a New Chapter Amid Quarterback Questions
Few organizations experienced more change this offseason than Cleveland.

After parting ways with Kevin Stefanski, the Browns turned to former Baltimore offensive coordinator Todd Monken as their new head coach, signaling a dramatic shift in offensive philosophy.
While Monken's arrival brings optimism, the biggest question remains under center.
Cleveland enters training camp without a clear long-term answer at quarterback as Deshaun Watson attempts to revive his career while younger options continue pushing for opportunities. The competition will likely dominate headlines throughout camp as Monken evaluates who gives the Browns their best chance to compete immediately while also building for the future.
The defense also faces a significant transition following the offseason departure of Myles Garrett and longtime defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Although Cleveland still features cornerstone players such as Denzel Ward , Jared Verse and Defensive Rookie of the Year Carson Schwesinger , replacing Garrett's production will be one of the league's toughest challenges.

For the Browns, training camp is less about playoff expectations and more about establishing an identity under a new coaching staff.
Pittsburgh Steelers : The McCarthy-Rodgers Reunion Headlines a New Era
No AFC North team enters training camp with more national attention than Pittsburgh.
Following Mike Tomlin's departure after 19 seasons, the Steelers hired Super Bowl-winning coach Mike McCarthy, who quickly reunited with longtime quarterback Aaron Rodgers for what is expected to be the future Hall of Famer's final NFL season.
The offseason didn't stop there.
Pittsburgh added wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. , running back Rico Dowdle and several defensive reinforcements while continuing to reshape its roster around Rodgers. The Steelers believe the veteran quarterback can elevate an offense that has struggled to consistently complement one of the NFL's traditionally strong defenses.

The biggest challenge now becomes building chemistry quickly. Rodgers and McCarthy enjoyed tremendous success together in Green Bay, but recreating that formula in Pittsburgh will require immediate production from an offense filled with new faces.
Meanwhile, new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham inherits a unit expected to improve after an inconsistent 2025 season.
Training camp will provide the first glimpse of whether Pittsburgh's aggressive offseason can translate into another AFC North title and its first postseason victory since the 2016 season.
The AFC North Remains Football's Most Unforgiving Division
Every team enters training camp with a different objective.

The Ravens are beginning a new era while attempting to remain championship contenders.
The Bengals believe an overhauled defense can finally complement one of the NFL's elite offenses.
The Browns are looking to establish stability under Todd Monken while finding answers at quarterback.
The Steelers are betting that the reunion of Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers can deliver immediate results.
Few divisions feature four organizations facing such compelling storylines. With coaching changes, superstar quarterbacks, roster overhauls, and championship aspirations spread throughout the division, every practice and every preseason snap will carry added significance.
By the time September arrives, the groundwork laid during training camp could determine not only the AFC North champion but also which franchise emerges as a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
