Akron basketball's Sharron Young is entering NCAA transfer portal

Akron Zips men's basketball player Sharron Young will enter the NCAA transfer portal, he announced on April 3 via social media.

Young played an important role with the Zips last season as a sophomore guard.

Young joins guard Eric Mahaffey as key UA players who have decided to test the portal waters on the heels of longtime Akron coach John Groce leaving for a job at the College of Charleston and the Zips hiring highly respected UA assistant Dustin Ford as Groce's successor.

The portal will open on April 7 for college basketball players. It will remain open for 15 days. Players must enter the portal within those 15 days if they intend to transfer. However, they are not required to pick a new school within those 15 days.

Young spent the past two seasons with Akron after graduating from Morgantown High School in West Virginia. Young won three consecutive AAAA state championships in high school.

Young helped Akron win its third consecutive Mid-American Conference Tournament title and appear in the NCAA Tournament last month. As a No. 12 seed, UA fell 91-71 to No. 5 Texas Tech on March 20 in the first round of March Madness.

What did Sharron Young say about entering the NCAA transfer portal?

Young expressed gratitude to the Zips in his announcement. Like Mahaffey, Young did not rule out a return to Akron.

"While this wasn't an easy decision, I feel evaluating all potential opportunities is the right next step for me," Young's statement read. "With that being said, Akron will always hold a special place in my heart, and I'm keeping the door open with the possibility of returning."

Young started 12 of the 34 games in which he appeared last season with the Zips, who went 29-6, including 17-1 in the Mid-American Conference.

Young averaged 7.2 points on 40.3% shooting from the field (33.3% on 3-pointers), 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.1 steals and 18.9 minutes.
