This past weekend,Akronbecame the first men's hoops team to three-peat as aMAC Tournamentchampion. It also became just the second MAC team to win four conference tourney titles in a span of five seasons.
Those results, all oncoach John Groce'swatch, mean Akron has met the definition of a MAC dynasty.
But, but, but... the prize awarded to the winner of the MAC tourney is the conference's automatic bid to March Madness, and Akron has yet to capitalize with an NCAA Tournament victory likeother MAC programs have in the past.

The Zips are saddled with all-time record of 0-7 in March Madness during their Division I era, which began with the 1980-81 season. Will this be the year they finally end their drought?
Without an NCAA Tournament win, Akron wouldn't be mentioned among the MAC's legendary teams. It would be a dynasty in a big-fish-little-pond sense but nothing more.
Afterdefeating Toledo 79-76on March 14 for the MAC tourney crown, Akron will soon appear in its third consecutive NCAA Tournament and the fourth in five years.

No. 12-seed Akron (29-5, 17-1 MAC) is scheduled to play No. 5 Texas Tech (22-10, 12-6 Big 12) in a first-round Midwest Region game at 12:40 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa. The winner will advance to face either No. 4 Alabama or No. 13 Hofstra in the second round on Sunday, March 22.

Texas Tech is 20th in the latest Associated Press top 25 poll. However, Akron will be a popular pick to pull off an upset because the Zips have been successful for years under Groce and Texas Tech is dealing with notable injuries.
The Red Raiders' best player, JT Toppin, suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on Feb. 17. The 6-foot-9 forward had been averaging team highs with 21.8 points and 10.8 rebounds.

Standout Red Raiders guard Christian Anderson (18.9 points, 7.6 assists) will be available for the NCAA Tournament, Texas Tech announced on March 14, but it remains to be seen whether he'll be at full strength after he suffered an apparent groin injury while slipping on an LED glass court used during the Big 12 tourney. Soft-tissue issues can be tricky.

Either way, Akron is obviously an underdog. ESPN Analytics gives Texas Tech an 82% chance to win.
People who pay attention to the MAC know the deal. If one of the conference's teams wins an NCAA Tournament game, it's often viewed as a bonus or icing on the cake. Making an impressive run, like Groce's Ohio team advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2012 or Kent State dancing to the Elite Eight in 2002, has only become more daunting in an age of college sports defined to a large extent by the transfer portal and name, image and likeness cash.

At some point, though, the Zips have got to get one win amid March Madness, right?
"Do I think this group has what it takes?" Groce asked rhetorically after watching "Selection Sunday" with his players March 15 at Rhodes Arena. "I think this group's special. I think we're talented. We're older. We've got a lot of seniors. I know they'll prepare well. They'll be locked in. But [Texas Tech] will be, too."

Like Akron, Buffalo won four MAC tourney titles in five seasons (2015-16 and 2018-19). The Bulls were one and done in the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and '16, but they won first-round games in '18 and '19. No. 13 Buffalo stunned No. 4 Arizona 89-68 in 2018, and No. 6 Buffalo beat No. 11 Arizona State 91-74 in 2019.

Longtime Kent State coach Rob Senderoff offered interesting analysis after KSU lost 75-68 to Akron on March 13 in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament. "In my eyes, this is their best team," Senderoff said of the Zips.
Senderoff also opined Akron is a "better team" than the MAC regular-season champion Miami RedHawks (31-1, 18-0), who will play fellow a No. 11 seed, Southern Methodist University (20-13, 8-10 ACC), in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament at approximately 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, in Dayton.

Senderoff noted Akron has gone 34-2 in MAC regular-season play and 6-0 in the conference tourney the past two seasons combined. Senderoff has been at the helm of Kent State since 2011, and he said the only MAC team better than Akron during his tenure is Buffalo in the 2018-19 season, when the Bulls went 32-4, including 16-2 in the conference. It was also the season in which Buffalo captured its fourth MAC tourney title in five years.

Akron's stretch now and Buffalo's then secured MAC dynasty status, though one packs more punch, at least until further notice.
The Zips will have another opportunity this week to win when it matters most and cement a new legacy.
