Albert Pujols is reportedly interviewing for the Houston Astros' managerial opening, bringing the former slugger into the search to replace Joe Espada .
The 46-year-old has never managed in the majors, but gained experience leading teams in the Dominican Republic and international competition.
Houston is seeking a manager under new general manager Randy Flores, who played alongside Pujols on the St. Louis Cardinals before serving as the organization's scouting director and assistant general manager.

MLB insider and Rompiendo Sports founder Mike Rodriguez shared Wednesday on X, formerly Twitter, that the Astros expected to interview Pujols in the coming days. Rodriguez views the three-time National League MVP as an ideal fit but stops short of naming him Houston's preferred candidate.
Foul Territory subsequently shared the development on its official account, citing multiple reports on the platform.
The Astros parted ways with Espada on October 14 after finishing 81-81 and being swept by the Chicago White Sox in the AL Wild Card Series. Houston had also dismissed general manager Dana Brown in August before hiring Flores on October 30.
Pujols guided Leones del Escogido to a Dominican league championship and the 2025 Caribbean Series title. He then managed the Dominican Republic to the semifinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
His playing career included 703 home runs and three National League MVP awards. Last offseason, he interviewed with the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres without landing either position.
The reported interview gives Pujols another opportunity to pursue his first major league managing job as the Astros work to complete their leadership changes for 2027.
