Alec Pierce is coming off the first 1,000-yard season of his career and should have real momentum heading into 2026. Instead, offseason ankle surgery has left him stuck on the sideline with no clear timeline. The receiver room around him also shifted this summer in ways that do not help his cause. Fantasy managers are being asked to bet on a player nobody can evaluate right now.
Pierce is the de facto WR1 in an offense that is equal parts polarizing and tantalizing.
As of early September, Pierce has an ADP of 91.2, but PFN fantasy analysts Jason Katz and Kyle Soppe are much lower on him. Their consensus ranking of Pierce comes in at 110.
He's projected for just 9.79 points per game this coming year, and he ranks only as the WR51 on the preseason board. This is one of the rare PFN rankings that I fully disagree with. I think Pierce is worthy of top-100 standing. Not only that, but I think he has very real WR1 upside with a new and enhanced role.
In 2025, he logged a career-high fantasy finish in both PPR and half PPR: 28th in the former, 24th in the latter. He broke the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career on only 47 catches, scoring 6 touchdowns. He also had 17 receptions of 20-plus yards, and over the past two seasons, he's achieved a 15.5% touchdown rate on his completions. He just signed a deal this past offseason that grants him $28.5 million in average annual value, which ranks 16th among wide receivers.
But even though he's cashed in and made bank, proving there's confidence in him as a potential WR1, I still feel like his stat line mischaracterizes him as a pure deep threat when the all-22 film tells a very different story: the story of a budding WR1 on his own team.
He has all the traits that you would expect from a deep threat at 6'3″, 211 pounds with 4.4 speed. He's a verifiable deep threat with field-stretching range, stem and pressing IQ, high-level body control with a wide catch radius, and steely conversion skills. But he also has the route nuance and the transition flexibility of an emerging true three-level threat.
On top of the other metrics, Pierce's 0.63 EPA per target was tied for third in the NFL in 2025, and his 10.88% catch rate over expectation was fourth among receivers with 80-plus targets. He also had a minuscule 1.2% drop rate. He was dealing with an injury for part of this offseason, but he was just removed from the PUP list and should now be a full go after missing some time in the summer.
Tyler Warren is a target threat for sure. He led the Colts in targets as a rookie and is primed to take out a big chunk of them again. But Michael Pittman Jr.'s departure opens up room for Pierce to take greater volume at wide receiver in the offense, and Josh Downs is a secondary threat behind him. The Colts' offensive structure, QB Daniel Jones, and the offensive line all remain relatively stable and should serve as the tide that helps lift Pierce to even greater heights.
Now that Pierce is healthy, I say go all in on him at his current ADP and feel comfortable reaching a bit if you feel like you need to. Pierce is valued as a WR3, but in my opinion, he has true WR1 ability and upside, volume production potential that could be realized in 2026, and the elite big-play gene that enhances his value as a total momentum shifter for your lineup.

Do I love the idea of starting a receiver who has shown one primary skill, was on PUP until Aug. 27 recovering from ankle surgery, and saw his team add target competition over the final month of the preseason?
No. No, I do not.
I have Pierce ranked as my preferred receiver on this team for this week (Baltimore allowed the eighth-most yards per deep pass last season, and I think it's possible that the Ravens beat the brakes off the Colts this weekend), but he sits outside of my top 30 at the position.
Given the nine-figure deal he signed this summer, it's fair to assume that he's proven to the organization that he can do more than run sprints, but I need to see it, and I'm not plugging him in until I do.
To be honest, I might need multiple weeks of proof before I match the optimism of the industry. This team has plenty of target competition for those short looks, and if Pierce remains in a singular role, I'm not sure I trust him as a fantasy starter.
