- Alex Afari receives TRO to potentially play for Kentucky in 2026
Kentucky football received a massive addition to the roster today. After a summer full of court cases, Kentucky's Alex Afari entered the fold to try and get a fifth year of eligibility. Louisville Circuit Court Judge Brian Edwards ruled in favor of Afari, allowing him to join the lawsuit against the NCAA, which gives Afari a temporary restraining order (TRO) to return to the Wildcats and play a fifth season of college football. Afari practiced with the team in August, until the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals briefly ruled him ineligible.
All of this court case talk goes over a lot of our heads, me included, and it is just constantly moving which makes it extremely difficult to keep track. Afari is an interesting case specifically, as mentioned in his court case, Afari did not sign an NFL contract. Afari had a medical waiver to participate in a tryout with the Green Bay Packers . According to the SEC, the criteria they set for the class of 2022 athletes to return to the field for a fifth year lines up to a tee with Afari's case.

Now, the addition of Afari would help out Jay Bateman's defense a ton. Afari has suited up in 48 games over his four years with the Wildcats, the safety-turned-linebacker tallied 193 tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss, six sacks and forced a fumble over that span. He will add to a linebacker room that is in need of depth and experience. Grant Godfrey is expected to take a step after last season, outside of Godfrey, the Wildcats have a group of talented but inexperienced backers in Elijah Barnes, Tavion Wallace and Antwan Smith. The Wildcats now have five linebackers that will be in the rotation this fall.
Overall, the addition of Afari could flip this position group from being an unknown into a strength. The defensive staff should feel confident in this unit to go out and exceed expectations in 2026. Afari brings a veteran presence as someone who has played a ton of SEC football over the last four seasons. The Wildcats will be able to showcase the new defensive scheme on Saturday against Youngstown State at 1 P.M. ET at Kroger Field.
Will Stein commented on this news during the SEC teleconference. "There are still some things that have to happen, I think, for us to feel really confident about playing him." said Stein. This a promising step in the right direction for Afari to get on the field this fall.
