As Kyle Shanahan enters his tenth year with the San Francisco 49ers, he holds the record as the franchise's longest-tenured head coach. He led the team to three NFC Championship games and two Super Bowls in seven years. However, he still has not won a championship, and an Atlanta Falcons legend took shots at Shanahan for his own mindset regarding his failure.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan talks to the media during the NFL League Meetings on March 30, 2026, at Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix.
Ex-Falcons WR points to Kyle Shanahan's Reason They Failed to Win a Title
The mood around the 49ers is amazing this October; they are undefeated, beating the Washington Commanders 23-17 on Monday Night Football. Coach Shanahan's squad is the favorite to win the NFC. Even so, ex-Falcons wide receiver Roddy White ruined the dream during the interview on the "Up and Adams" Show.
Kay Adams asked if Shanahan would ever win a Super Bowl; White said "no."
"I think, me personally, that he's a great offensive mind. But in tough situations, in pressure situations, the over-aggressive play calls always get him in trouble," White explained. "I think that's just his mentality. He doesn't play situational football well. That's the only thing that I think that's really like a knock on his game…"
"And that gets his team in trouble when you play against great quarterbacks. And when you make it to a Super Bowl, you're going to be playing against a great quarterback. Your ability to understand the flow of the game and the things like that is gonna help you win those games. And I think, especially if you have to play Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl, that guy has learned from Tom Brady, just playing him each and every year, playing him in Super Bowls, he knows what it takes," White further said.
White says that Shanahan, against top QBs like Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl, knows the right moves and avoids self-inflicted losses. Still, he sometimes tries too hard to win by himself.
Shanahan's playoff heartbreaks include falling to the Chiefs in Super Bowls LIV and LVIII. But that story started on February 5, 2017, back when he was calling plays for Atlanta in Super Bowl LI. That was the infamous game where the Falcons collapsed, giving up a 28–3 fourth-quarter lead to the New England Patriots. The WR White was on that 2016 roster playing for Shanahan.
49ers QB Brock Purdy MVP Run Continues
FanDuel and DraftKings have locked the 49ers in as the overall favorites to win the Super Bowl at +600 odds. A big reason for this is quarterback Brock Purdy's one more incredible MVP run . This season, Purdy threw for 1,460 yards, ranking him 12th in the league. He is also tied for 1st with 14 touchdowns, tied for 8th with 2 interceptions, and leads the NFL with a first-place QBR of 83.1.
Up next, the San Francisco 49ers play host to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. This game will bring a personal challenge for defensive coordinator Raheem Morris as he goes up against his former team, all while managing injuries to Nick Bosa and Mike Evans.
