Alyssa Thomas made her disappointment clear after the Phoenix Mercury finished the 2026 WNBA season with a 16-28 record. One year after reaching the WNBA Finals, Phoenix missed the playoffs and now faces difficult questions about its direction.
Thomas did not hide her frustration during the team's exit interviews. She described the season as an unfamiliar experience and made clear she did not want to feel that way again. Her comments put renewed attention on the decisions ahead.
The Mercury must now determine how to build a stronger roster around their veteran star. Thomas remains committed to competing for championships, but Phoenix's next moves will help determine whether the franchise can return to contention.
Thomas had grown accustomed to playing meaningful basketball late in the season. Before Phoenix missed the playoffs in 2026, she had reached the postseason every year since 2017, including 3 trips to the WNBA Finals.
The Mercury's disappointing record marked a sharp change from their 2025 campaign. That season, Thomas helped Phoenix reach the championship series after joining the franchise in a major trade before the start of the year.
Speaking after the season ended, Thomas described missing the playoffs as an unfamiliar feeling. She also made clear that the team needed to respond differently in 2027, signaling that another season like this one would not meet her expectations.
Thomas has built her career around competing at a high level. At 34, she remains a central part of Phoenix's plans, but the team's poor finish raises questions about how quickly it can build another championship contender.
During her exit interview, Thomas said she was comfortable in Phoenix and with how the organization had treated her. However, she stressed that basketball results matter most, particularly the team's ability to compete for playoff places and championships.
That distinction poses a clear challenge to the Mercury. Maintaining a positive relationship with Thomas is important, but the franchise must also show progress on the court. Her comments do not amount to a trade request, yet they underline the urgency surrounding the offseason.

One of Phoenix's biggest decisions involves Kelsey Plum, whom the Mercury acquired near the 2026 trade deadline. The 5-time All-Star arrived with the potential to add another major scoring threat alongside Thomas and Kahleah Copper.
Plum played only 5 games for Phoenix after dealing with a lower-leg injury. That limited run made it difficult to evaluate how effectively the trio could operate together over a full season, leaving the front office with important questions.
General manager Nick U'Ren publicly expressed the organization's desire to retain Plum. However, Plum has the right to make her own decision in free agency. Her choice could significantly affect Phoenix's offensive options and the team's plans for its next roster.
Thomas and Copper remained important pieces of Phoenix's roster, but the team struggled to reproduce its previous season's success. Without enough consistent support, opposing defenses could focus more attention on the Mercury's leading players.
The departure of Satou Sabally also left a significant gap. Sabally had played a major role in Phoenix's 2025 Finals run before joining the New York Liberty, and the Mercury struggled to replace her impact during the following season.
Phoenix now has to decide whether to prioritize another high-level scorer, improve its depth or pursue a combination of both. The right approach will depend on which players are available and how the front office evaluates the team's weaknesses.
Thomas was also asked about her role in identifying problems and offering input on adjustments during the season. Her response made clear that she sees a distinction between contributing as a player and making coaching decisions.
"I mean, I'm not the coach, so that's for them to make those decisions," Thomas said, according to reporting from Mercury beat coverage. The comment placed responsibility for tactical changes with the coaching staff rather than the players.
Her answer does not prove that Thomas has lost confidence in coach Nate Tibbetts. However, it highlights the need for clarity about how the coaching staff plans to use its leading players and improve the team's approach next season.
U'Ren also acknowledged the disappointing results during the Mercury's exit interviews. He said the team had not delivered the level of performance its fans deserved and stressed that the organization wanted to put a better product on the court.
That admission matters because the Mercury's struggles were not limited to one player or a brief stretch of poor form. Their 16-28 record reflected problems across a season that began with expectations shaped by the previous year's Finals appearance.
U'Ren said Phoenix would consider different ways to improve, including adding top-end talent and strengthening the roster's depth. That flexibility gives the franchise options, but the decisions must translate into a more consistent team rather than simply adding names.

The Mercury have Thomas under contract through the 2028 season, giving the organization time to build around her. Still, that timeline does not remove the pressure to make meaningful improvements while she continues to compete at a high level.
Phoenix will need to assess its available resources, free-agent possibilities and the fit of potential additions. Retaining Plum could give the team another scoring option, while targeted changes elsewhere may help reduce the burden on Thomas and Copper.
The goal should be a roster that can withstand injuries and difficult stretches without falling out of contention. Thomas' comments show that she wants tangible progress, and the front office must decide how best to turn that expectation into a workable plan.
Fun fact: Alyssa Thomas set WNBA single-season records with 357 assists and 8 triple-doubles in 2025. She increased the assist record to 358 in 2026.
The Mercury's next season will reveal whether their offseason decisions address the problems exposed in 2026. Thomas has made her ambitions clear, but Phoenix must build a team capable of supporting those goals across a full schedule.
The franchise cannot rely solely on its stars to reverse the decline. Stronger depth, better continuity and clearer roles could all help the Mercury return to the playoff picture, though no single move can guarantee a championship run.
For now, Thomas' frustration is best understood as a demand for improvement rather than evidence that she intends to leave. Phoenix has an opportunity to respond with a thoughtful offseason and demonstrate that last season was a setback, not its new standard.
Phoenix finished the 2026 WNBA season 16-28 and missed the playoffs after reaching the Finals in 2025.
Alyssa Thomas described the season as an unfamiliar experience and said she did not want to repeat it.
Kelsey Plum's free-agency decision could shape the Mercury's next roster.
Phoenix must improve its depth and support around Thomas and Kahleah Copper.
