Dennis Rodman may not remember what he was doing or where he was when Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Chairman Jerry Colangelo informed him about his induction. However, Dennis still has a vivid recollection of what he was told that day.
According to The Worm, he neither expected to receive such a call nor thought about being inducted into the Hall of Fame . Despite being a controversial figure for the better part of his NBA career, Rodman was still recognized by the Hall of Fame for his achievements and contributions to the game.
Admittedly, Rodman found it quite cool to earn a Hall of Fame status. However, he was a bit surprised when Colangelo laid out the board's specific conditions before inducting him.
"I really didn't think about it. It was funny in the fact that I really didn't care to go into the Hall of Fame. I really didn't," Dennis told The Athletic in 2018. "[Jerry] Colangelo called me up and asked me, 'Dennis, do you want to be in the Hall of Fame?' I told him I didn't care. I thought it was another award. And he said, 'Congratulations, you're in the Hall of Fame.' I said, 'OK, great. Cool.' He said, 'Well, we have some stipulations. You can't do this. You can't wear this. And you can't have this.' I'm, like, 'OK, so, um, am I still in the Hall of Fame if I do that?'"
Why Rodman never obeyed
Whatever the Hall of Fame board's stipulations were, Rodman didn't show up at his special occasion unrecognizable. There was nothing crazy with his outfit, either. Just standard Dennis. By that, we mean a custom-made suit, blonde hair, shades and several earrings.
Judging by how Rodman behaved during his Hall of Fame induction, it's safe to say he listened and complied to some extent. However, the seven-time rebounding champion himself knew that it wouldn't have been the case back when he was still playing in the league.
"But at a point in my career when I started having tattoos and dying my hair, it was a point where they wanted to kick me out the league," Rodman recalled. "They actually called me. David Stern actually called me and said, 'Dennis, could you stop getting tattoos? Could you stop doing all these crazy antics because we're having a problem?' And I said, 'No, I'm not going to stop that.' Because at that time I was going through some type of phase."
"Because I thought that once you join an NBA team, I thought it was a family," he continued. "I thought that you'd be there forever until you retire. I didn't realize until six years into my career it wasn't like that. It's a business."
A Hall of Fame life
In a world that demands conformity, Rodman never shied away from demonstrating his radical authenticity. For many basketball fans, "Dennis The Menace" is in the Hall of Fame because he grabbed an insane amount of rebounds, but off the court, the Worm is a Hall of Famer because he grabbed life by the throat and refused to let it tell him what to do.
In retrospect, Rodman serves as living proof that true greatness doesn't always look polished and poised. Sometimes, it looks like a rainbow-colored-haired man with a lot of piercings diving headfirst into the ground.
