Amare Ferrell's recent interceptions have brought attention to his ability to find the football. His explanation for that success starts with preparation, coaching and a responsibility to finish when opportunities arrive.
Asked about collecting three interceptions over the last two games, the Indiana defensive back immediately credited Coach Haines for positioning him to succeed. For Ferrell, being in the right spot is only part of the assignment. The next step belongs to the player.
"He always talks about whenever that play comes to you, you got to be the one that make the play," Ferrell said. "Nobody else can make that play for you."
That approach helps explain how Ferrell views his recent production. He described reading the quarterback's eyes while also recognizing formation clues emphasized by his coach throughout the week. Those details allow him to trust his instincts and play quickly.
His explanation points to a balance between discipline and aggression. Indiana wants defenders attacking the football, but Ferrell made clear that the pursuit begins with fulfilling individual responsibilities.
"I mean, of course, the first thing, you know, is do your job," he said.
Once those assignments are handled, the expectation is collective effort. Ferrell said Indiana wants all 11 defenders pursuing the ball, whether the offense runs or passes. Getting additional defenders around the play creates more chances for something positive to happen.
Behind that approach is a secondary whose connection extends beyond practices and games. Ferrell said the defensive backs spend much of their time together away from football. That familiarity carries into their communication during competition.
"I know what they're thinking, they know what I'm thinking," he said.
The group also has developed its own identity. Ferrell explained that its "drenched" terminology is another way of saying receivers are covered. The nickname began last year, and he said the players have since taken it further as fans embrace the idea.
Ferrell said he originated the nickname, while the purple associated with it came from an emoji the group chose. The meaning is straightforward: Indiana's defensive backs want everything covered.
Ferrell also praised A.J. Harris, describing him as a veteran whose physicality, tackling and coverage ability strengthen the boundary. His comments reflected confidence in a teammate trusted to execute his assignment.
For Ferrell, the interceptions are part of a broader defensive standard. Preparation puts players in position. Communication helps them function together. Pursuit gives them opportunities to finish.
"We're going to fly around," Ferrell said. "We're going to hit you for 60 minutes and we're not going to let up at all."
His recent production gives that message a tangible result. Indiana's secondary has an identity, but Ferrell's focus remains on the work required to support it every snap.
