Amare Ferrell wants younger Indiana players to learn from what he does every day. His leadership approach centers on meeting the program's expectations consistently enough that teammates can follow his example.
For a player discussing his fourth year at Indiana, that responsibility carries personal meaning. Ferrell has experienced the program's transition firsthand, and he understands why its progress matters to the people who have followed it.
"Just seeing this whole program transition to what it is now, it means a lot to the fans and to me as well," Ferrell said.
His approach to leadership fits that perspective. Asked how he helps younger players and incoming transfers, Ferrell emphasized doing things correctly and following the standards established by Coach Cignetti .
He wants his actions to give teammates something dependable to observe.
"Not just being somebody that's a talker, just being somebody that live it every single day," he said.
That everyday mentality also shapes how Ferrell processes significant victories. When asked about the historical importance of Indiana's win at Michigan, he said he had not known much about the drought referenced in the question until his coach mentioned it.
Instead, Ferrell recalled the message that this particular Indiana team had never played in the Big House. The focus was on the group taking the field and completing its assignment.
"We went in there and we handled business," he said.
Ferrell believes the confidence required for that performance had already been strengthened at Nebraska. He pointed to Indiana's fourth-quarter deficit there and the experience of finding a way to win.
In his view, that earlier adversity helped prepare the Hoosiers for another difficult situation at Michigan. The connection between those games was the team's growing belief that it could respond when circumstances became uncomfortable.
His willingness to recognize teammates offered another glimpse of his leadership. Asked which play deserved more attention beyond his interception, Ferrell singled out a sack by the defender identified as Toby in the interview.
He believed that play changed the game's momentum. Ferrell also praised the pass rusher's explosiveness, intelligence and physicality, making clear that his own takeaway was only one piece of the defensive effort.
Now the challenge is carrying those habits into the next matchup. Asked about a week featuring homecoming, Halloween and College GameDay, Ferrell kept his answer centered on Minnesota.
"Just go in there and win the game, beat Minnesota," he said.
He also stressed correcting mistakes from the previous week. That emphasis matters because confidence can help a team through adversity, but it still needs to be reinforced through preparation.
Ferrell's message was consistent throughout the interview: set the example, trust teammates and keep improving. For Indiana, his leadership provides a steady voice grounded in the daily work he expects from himself.
