There is a strong feeling that the Los Angeles Chargers are going to make big changes after starting this season 0-6, and that those changes could start within the coming days before the NFL's Nov. 10 trade deadline.
Everyone seems to have their own ideas on how to "fix" the Chargers, and some are insistent that the team trade franchise quarterback Justin Herbert, who is struggling much more than he ever has in the pros.
Herbert has completed just 59.4% of his passing attempts and has thrown more interceptions (eight) than touchdown passes (five) this season. Two weeks ago, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said that he spoke to someone with the franchise who said it isn't even considering trading Herbert. But that hasn't put a stop to the speculation that Herbert's days in L.A. could be numbered.
Which other teams could he fit well with?
In a recent article for CBS Sports, Jordan Dajani named five players who could use a change of scenery, and Herbert was one of them. He then listed the Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles as possible fits.
"Herbert leads the NFL in interceptions this year with eight and is averaging a career-low 190.2 passing yards per game," Dajani wrote. "He became the first quarterback in NFL history to start a season 0-6 while throwing an interception with at least two sacks taken in each game. It's been a disaster.
"Justin Herbert is not Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson. He can't be leading the Chargers in rushing yards like he did against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, and he can't power a team to success by himself. Herbert needs a more comfortable situation — maybe one that includes a Brian Flores defense and Justin Jefferson."
Obviously, Mike McDaniel, the current offensive coordinator of the Chargers, hasn't implemented an offense that has come even remotely close to working. The Vikings are 6-0, but their offense is relatively weak and starting QB Kyler Murray is considered to be only somewhat above average.
With threats such as Jefferson, Jordan Addison and tight end T.J. Hockenson, not to mention the NFL's best defense in terms of points allowed, the Vikings could perhaps become true Super Bowl contenders with Herbert under center.
The Jets haven't had a true franchise quarterback since the Vietnam War, and the star-crossed franchise is starving for someone to come in and be its savior. The Eagles were world champions as recently as two seasons ago, but quarterback Jalen Hurts is out for the season due to a bilateral pulmonary embolism, and his entire football career is now in jeopardy.
It's hard to imagine the Chargers trading Herbert, even during the upcoming offseason. But if they improve their offense around him this offseason and things still go south next season, perhaps they'll give getting rid of him a thought in the spring of 2028.
