The Los Angeles Angels fired general manager Perry Minasian on Friday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN reports. According to Gonzalez, the Angels are also bringing in former St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations and general manager John Mozeliak, who will serve as a consultant. Sam Blum of The Athletic is reporting that Mozeliak will be the interim GM. The move comes during another abysmal season for an LA ball club that has not reached the postseason since 2014.
The Angels are set to enter their game against the Athletics on Friday with a 34-48 record. They are in last place in the American League West standings. The Angels' struggles have been difficult to ignore, and now the Halos are making a general manager change.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic predicted on Thursday that Minasian — as well as manager Kurt Suzuki — would be fired after the season . Suzuki is maintaining his role for now, but the Angels ultimately decide to make the GM change sooner than Rosenthal expected.
However, the timing of the move is questionable. The Angels are currently preparing for the trade deadline . Minasian had surely begun to prepare his plan for the deadline, and now Mozeliak and the Angels' front office will be in charge of getting ready for the deadline.
It remains to be seen if Minasian's departure means the Angels will be more open to selling. Rumors have suggested that LA is going to be hesitant to move potential trade candidates despite the team's struggles. Only time will tell if the Angels end up changing their plans.
