Already trailing 3-1 in the third inning, the Los Angeles Angels appeared to be in deep trouble during their Sunday matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays . But then outfielder Jose Siri decided to play hero ball.
With the bases loaded, Taylor Walls smashed a ball to left field. Siri tracked it down and went over the wall to rob the potential grand slam. In the process, he saved a post-game buffet the Rays clearly have planned, via MLB's X, formerly Twitter account.
Unfortunately for the Angels, Siri's robbery didn't change the course of the matchup. Tacking on a pair of runs in the seventh inning, the Rays hold a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the eighth. They'll need someone to match Siri's play in the field at the plate.
The outfielder signed with Los Angeles on a minor league deal back in February. He made it into 13 major league games heading into Sunday's clash, hitting .313 with a home run and two RBI. While the batting average is impressive, Siri is a career .207 hitting. The Angels are expecting more impressive defensive plays rather than Siri dominating in the batter's box.
What Los Angeles really wants though is more wins. They managed to pick one up against Tampa Bay , but if Sunday's score stands, they will have lost the season. Overall, the Angels entered the game with a 23-36 record. Continued losing will only make the Mike Trout trade noise louder .
Siri won't be able to do everything on his own and won't turn the Angels into world beaters. But if he continues his strong defensive play, he'll be an asset for Los Angeles' outfield and whoever is eating from that buffet after the game.
