Washington Wizards forward Anthony Davis had a solid outing in their 110-103 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Monday. However, he appeared to hurt his right hand late in the game, raising concerns.
The incident occurred with 33.3 seconds remaining and Charlotte leading 106-100. At the top of the key, Davis set a screen for Tre Johnson, but Hornets guard Grayson Allen hit his hand as he fought through the pick. After play was stopped following a foul, AD was seen favoring his wrist.
Kyshawn George checked out on his All-Star teammate as they walked across the court to resume play. Wizards coach Brian Keefe later expressed optimism that the injury was nothing serious.
Nothing to worryabout
After the game, Davis said there was nothing to worry about with his hand, dismissing it as temporary discomfort he had to bear.
"Oh no, I was hitting too many shots, and I was just shaking it out — it was kind of hot," Davis told reporters.
Against the Hornets, Davis played efficiently, finishing with a double-double of 29 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 11-of-22 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point range. Trae Young added 22 points and 10 assists, and George added 20 points.
However, their collective effort wasn't enough to overcome the Hornets, who saw an offensive explosion from Brandon Miller, who scored 39 points.
The loss dropped the Wizards to 2-2, with their next game on Wednesday on the road against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Davis status to be monitored
Although Davis said the injury was nothing serious, the Wizards were taking no chances. Coach Keefe said in his postgame address that the team's medical staff was already evaluating the situation and that they were awaiting further updates.
The Wizards are understandably cautious about Davis' health, given his extensive injury history and the stretches of playing time he has missed throughout his career.
Last season, Davis suffered a torn ligament in his left hand that ultimately required season-ending surgery and forced him to miss the remainder of the 2025-26 season. He initially sustained the injury while playing for the Dallas Mavericks before being traded to the Wizards.
Out to help the Wizards
With the Wizards, Davis knows what is expected of him and is looking to deliver. He is up for a contract extension but isn't paying much attention to it right now.
"[I'll decide] when the season is over. We're going to go through the season and try to do what I do at a high level. And then when it's over, sit down and have those conversations again with the front office," he said in the lead-up to the ongoing campaign.
Washington missed the playoffs in each of the last five seasons and in seven of the last eight, including a dismal 17-65 campaign last season.
The Wizards can only hope Davis' hand injury isn't serious, as his absence could make it harder for a team trying to turn the corner and make meaningful progress this season.
