The Chicago Cubs snapped a 108-year World Series drought with their championship in 2016. It was a thrilling Fall Classic that saw Chicago defeat the Cleveland Indians (now Cleveland Guardians) in a seven-game series. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo led the Cubs to the ’16 victory. Additionally, Bryant, a third baseman, and Rizzo, a first baseman, also happened to make the series-clinching out in Game 7.
Bryant recently joined Rizzo and David Ross’ podcast and he discussed the moment with Rizzo, via the Lovable Reunion.
“I think leading up to that (moment), two outs, it’s every person’s dream to be the one to make the last out,” Bryant said. “Field the last out, catch it, get the last strikeout. But you don’t want it to come to you.”
Rizzo then made an admission.
“I was terrified,” Rizzo said. “That ball off the bat, I was like ‘f**k that’s a hit.’ And I put my head down to go to first and I look up and I see him, like, ‘Oh f**k he’s got it.'”
Bryant then acknowledged that he was thinking about potential obstacles while charging the baseball that was hit off of Guardians infielder Michael Martinez’s bat.
“I was like, I’m gonna have to throw this on the run,” Bryant said. “Which, wet grass (it had rained previously in Cleveland ), I got to it so quick… Maybe two bounces. I’m throwing the ball and my foot’s slipping.”
Rizzo thought Bryant’s throw was going to sail over his head, but it ended up being a good throw and the Cubs won the World Series. It was not surprising to see two of the 2016 ball club’s heroes end up making the final out.
