NASHVILLE, Tenn. — There were expectations for Antonio Jordan the moment he stepped on campus.
The 6-foot-6 wide receiver has tools few college receivers across the country can match. He also hailed from Warren High School, a historic in-state program that produced legendary Arkansas football pass-catchers like Treylon Burks, Jarius Wright and Greg Childs.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, Jordan had his coming out party. The Hogs desperately needed him.
Jordan hauled in five catches for 74 yards as the Razorbacks (3-4, 1-3 SEC) downed Vanderbilt 31-21 for their first SEC victory in two years. Entering the weekend, Jordan had three catches in his entire career.
He was Arkansas ' leading receiver during a rare conference win, and he rose to the occasion with Chris Marshall sidelined due to a leg injury.
"They know what to expect out of me, and I know what I'm capable of," Jordan said. "I know I'm next up, so it's time to get the job done."
Jordan didn't get off to a smooth start against the Commodores. One play after Marshall's final snap on the field, quarterback KJ Jackson targeted Jordan on a quick slant pass.
Drop.
Three plays later, Jackson came Jordan's way again. The throw was low, but it was still in the wide receiver's radius. He once again failed to make the catch.
That didn't deter Jackson's faith. The junior quarterback had two more targets for Jordan on the drive. He hauled in both passes. One catch converted a third-and-8, and the Hogs eventually scored their first offensive touchdown of the night to tie the score at 14-14 just before halftime.
"I think one of the things I've been talking about with a lot of our guys is when the results aren't always going your way, keeping that confidence," Ryan Silverfield said. "Keeping that belief, and going, and pushing, and I think you got to see that tonight, and hopefully, that gives (Jordan) the ability to go out and continue to make plays."
Jordan's biggest play of the night came on Arkansas ' game-winning touchdown drive.
On second-and-6 from the Vanderbilt 35, Jackson lofted a pass down the left sideline toward Jordan. It spiraled through the Nashville sky toward the receiver's back shoulder, and Jordan perfectly contorted himself to beat the cornerback in coverage, make the catch and get multiple toes down in bounds.
Cam Settles scored a touchdown on the very next snap.
"I knew in my head I had to make that play," Jordan said.
Jackson knew Jordan would provide the game-changing moment before the Hogs got into formation.
"Coming out of the huddle, I told (Jordan), 'go make a play,'" Jackson said. "I mean, it was man coverage. He got a little double move."
All season, Arkansas has been craving a second reliable option for Jackson. Marshall has racked up impressive numbers and despite missing the entire second half against Vanderbilt, the Boise State transfer is 10th nationally with 633 receiving yards. Silverfield said it was too early to tell if Marshall will miss any further action.
But with the most consistent weapon on the sideline Saturday night, Arkansas stumbled into another capable playmaker.
Midway through his sophomore season, Jordan found the perfect occasion to build belief for his own future.
"It's that hype, like, 'man, we need to let him show up,'" Silverfield said. "We know how talented he is."
