PITTSBURGH — For the first time in 25 years, Arizona State has two players who were drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Jordyn Tyson and Max Iheanachor headlined ASU as the top picks this year, with Tyson drafted eighth overall and Iheanachor 21st overall. It marked the first time two Sun Devils heard their names called on opening night since Adam Archuleta and Todd Heap were taken in the first round in 2001.

The significance of this milestone extends beyond individual achievements. For ASU, it signals a resurgence in nationwide relevance, with player development at the forefront. First-round picks are often viewed as a benchmark for elite athletes, and for the program to match a milestone that hadn't happened in so long showcases a shift in how the Sun Devils are now viewed.
Tyson, who will head to Louisiana with the New Orleans Saints, and Iheanachor, who will go to the Pittsburgh Steelers, stood out throughout their collegiate careers in different ways. Tyson's playmaking ability and Iheanachor's dominance in the trenches reflect a program that has found stability after a few underperforming years.

Arizona State has reestablished itself as a destination for high-level prospects, and having two first-round selections offers proof of that progress.
The 2001 draft class is still remembered fondly in Tempe, and a new pair of first-round stars is drawing not only comparisons but also expectations. It strengthens the bond between the program and its fans, who see draft success as a reflection of its work.

In the landscape of college football, ASU's breakthrough could have lasting effects. A quarter-century later, the Sun Devils are back in a familiar spotlight, and as they bid their former players well in their pro careers, they'll look to continue the trend of developing top-tier talent.
