FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas football closed out its work this spring with the annual Red-White game on Saturday, April 25.

First-year coach Ryan Silverfield and the Razorbacks divided their teams evenly rather than playing the first-team offense and first-team defense against each other. Redshirt sophomore quarterback KJ Jackson led the Red Team to a 14-13 victory.

Arkansas football spring observations

Quincy Rhodes sack highlights strong day

The star senior defensive end got to Jackson on the final play of the scrimmage for a game-ending sack. It was a fitting end as Rhodes consistently caused disruption throughout the day and finished with three tackles.

Rhodes nearly had a couple of other sacks on the afternoon, and he almost disrupted a long touchdown earlier in the day.

Cam Settles has the best day among the running backs

The sophomore running back was rewarded for his excellent work on Saturday with a 7-yard touchdown run late in the action. He was a consistent force out of the backfield and finished with a game-high 57 yards rushing on seven carries.

"I just feel like I'm a very balanced back," Settles said. "I can do it all. So that's just what I base my game off of. I want to be able to catch the ball in the backfield, be able to run through the tackles and be able to run outside the tackles as well."

Unfortunately for Settles, the White Team could not convert a two-point conversion after the touchdown, and that proved to be the difference on the scoreboard.

Steven Soles Jr. got consistent pressure

The Kentucky transfer recorded two sacks on the day. Like Rhodes, he got consistent pressure and beat backup right tackle Adam Hawkes on multiple occasions.

Soles thought he would have had more sacks in a live-game situation.

"(Silverfield) didn't call them all. He likes to give the offense grace and let them play," he said.

It would be a major development if the JACK linebacker can become a force off the edge and compliment Rhodes as a pass-rush specialist.

"We were already going to pressure teams," Silverfield said. "But I feel more comfortable with the ability of someone to line up opposite of (Rhodes) and get home."

KJ Jackson connects with CJ Brown for day's biggest play

The longest offensive play of the day came from two returnees as Jackson found Brown on a deep crossing route for a 65-yard score.

The touchdown gave the Red Team a 14-7 lead, but it was very nearly another sack by Rhodes.

Drops were a problem for Arkansas receivers

Chris Marshall and Jamari Hawkins both dealt with drops. That's not what you want to see from a receivers room that is supposed to be deep and help out its young quarterbacks.

Nsongbeh Ginyui returned an interception for touchdown

AJ Hill was looking for Chris Marshall across the middle of the field, but there was a miscommunication and Ginyui took advantage with a pick-six.

"If the ball's coming right to you, God-send," Ginyui said. "I made the play."

It was one of the lone ugly moments for the Arkansas offense. Ginyui, a Bakersfield College transfer, made the biggest defensive play of the day. It will be interesting if he earns himself some playing time in the fall.

AJ Hill scored first touchdown on 1-yard run

The Arkansas quarterback kept the ball on a read-option and strolled into the end zone. It capped off a 12-play drive that included a fourth-down conversion. It gave the White Team a 7-0 lead after its offense executed well outside of a pair of drops on the opening series.

KJ Jackson overthrew potential touchdown

The Red Team's second drive got all the way down to the White's 22-yard line before KJ Jackson overthrew an open CJ Brown in the left corner of the end zone. Red had to settle for a field goal, which Braeden McAlister pushed too far right.
