The Atlanta Hawks ruled the second-year forward out for the rest of their game against the Washington Wizards at Capital One Arena. He had 2 points on 1-of-1 shooting, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in 10 minutes before he was ruled out.
Atlanta led 68-61 at halftime.
Hawks Were Already Short Up Front
Newell's exit came with Jalen Johnson out for a second straight game. Johnson sprained his left ankle in the third quarter of the Oct. 31 loss at New Orleans, a 121-99 game, and did not return.
He was listed as questionable Wednesday before being ruled out. Without him Monday, the Hawks beat the Indiana Pacers 108-104 on Onyeka Okongwu's driving hook with 10.2 seconds left. Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored a season-high 34 with nine 3-pointers.
Jock Landale missed his second game in a row with a left hip strain, and Mouhamed Gueye is recovering from left foot surgery. Henri Veesaar tore his right ACL in a Sept. 15 workout and is expected to miss the season.
In that Oct. 31 loss to the Pelicans, Newell went 5-of-11 from the field and finished with 13 points and 4 rebounds.
Newell's Contract and Rookie Season
On Nov. 1, Atlanta exercised the $3.56 million team option on his rookie contract for 2027-28. He is making about $3.4 million this season and turned 21 last month.
He appeared in 44 games as a rookie and started two of them. Newell averaged 5.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in 11.4 minutes, shooting 53.8% from the field and 38.7% from 3-point range.
The Hawks also sent him to the G League's College Park Skyhawks several times last season, with his last recall coming March 28 before a game against the Sacramento Kings. In January, a right quadriceps contusion knocked him out of a win over the Golden State Warriors in the second quarter.
The 6-foot-10 Newell was born in Atlanta and played one season at Georgia, where he led the team at 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds a game. He was the first Bulldog drafted since Anthony Edwards went first overall in 2020.
Atlanta took him 23rd in 2025 with a pick acquired from New Orleans on draft night. In that trade, the Hawks sent the 13th pick to the Pelicans and also received a 2026 first-round pick.
The Hawks entered Wednesday at 4-4. They host the Wizards again Friday at 7 p.m. ET at State Farm Arena, and the Brooklyn Nets visit Saturday.
