Aston Villa's midfield has changed since Unai Emery began structuring the squad around a demanding schedule. The club sits 10th in the Premier League, with three wins, three draws and three defeats from nine matches in 2026/27. Europe has offered a brighter picture, including a 6-0 Champions League league-phase victory over Fenerbahçe.
That contrast leaves Emery balancing domestic consistency with a squad capable of competing across several fronts. John McGinn brings drive and leadership, while Boubacar Kamara gives Villa defensive cover. Ross Barkley remains an experienced option, although his nine appearances have all come from the bench. With his contract expiring in June 2027, Villa must decide whether to retain him or prepare for another midfield departure.
Villa addressed the position heavily in the summer, adding German international Leon Goretzka and Brazilian midfielder João Gomes. Both have settled quickly and strengthened Emery's choices. Alongside Kamara and McGinn, they give the manager five senior options competing for two places in a double pivot or advanced midfield role. That depth matters during a packed calendar, but leaves little room for another expensive arrival.
Sport Witness , citing Brazilian outlets Terra and RTI Esporte, reports that Galatasaray have softened their stance on Gabriel Sara and are prepared to discuss a sale. The 27-year-old Brazilian, formerly of Norwich City, had been treated as untouchable during the summer. Reports place Galatasaray's asking price around £33.3m, while Turkish coverage suggests approximately £29.2m could open the door.
Aston Villa have joined Newcastle United, Everton and Brighton in expressing interest, although Newcastle and Everton have been linked for longer. Napoli and Roma have maintained contact with Sara's representatives, adding competition from Italy. Villa's previous business involving Nicolò Zaniolo, Yasin Özcan and Tammy Abraham shows its familiarity with the Turkish market.
Sara has produced two goals and four assists in 10 Süper Lig appearances this season, alongside three Champions League outings. His two assists in Galatasaray's 4-0 win over Konyaspor underlined his passing range and threat from set pieces.

No. Sara is an excellent technician, but Villa have already invested heavily in Goretzka and Gomes. His passing and dead-ball quality would add something, yet Emery demands aggressive counter-pressing and discipline when possession breaks down. Sara would need a carefully structured role, while five established midfielders already compete for limited minutes.
A fee near £30m, plus wages reportedly worth £3m net annually in Turkey, would create a sizeable commitment. A Premier League contract could exceed £75,000 weekly, before bonuses. With PSR pressure and Barkley's contract decision approaching, Villa should protect their budget and consider younger internal options rather than block their development with another expensive senior signing. Sara's availability may tempt them; their midfield already has enough expensive answers for Villa.
