Alan Shearer has criticised Aston Villa's defending after Brentford snatched a late equaliser in Saturday's 2-2 Premier League draw, with Matty Cash and João Gomes coming under scrutiny for their roles in the goal.
Unai Emery's side looked set to claim all three points when John McGinn put Villa ahead in the 77th minute. However, Kristoffer Ajer struck two minutes later, exposing familiar problems in Villa's defensive organisation.
Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day, Shearer highlighted the lack of concentration that allowed Brentford to punish Villa so quickly after McGinn's goal.
Shearer pointed directly at Cash's positioning and Gomes' failure to provide sufficient defensive support during Brentford's equaliser.
"Matty Cash gets caught ball watching. Ajer give-and-go, (João) Gomes certainly doesn't help Cash out at all," Shearer said on the BBC programme.
"That's pretty weak. That is exactly what John McGinn was on about."
The former Newcastle United striker referred to McGinn's frustration over Villa's work without possession, particularly after the hosts had worked hard to regain the lead.
Villa had little time to celebrate their advantage before Brentford punished their defensive lapse. Ajer exploited the space available, while Cash failed to react quickly enough to the developing move. Gomes' positioning further complicated the situation, leaving Villa vulnerable when they needed composure most.
Villa's attacking play offered encouragement, particularly after Nicolas Jackson responded to Brentford's early opener with an equaliser in the 12th minute.
The contest continued to swing between the sides, and McGinn's late strike appeared to have settled matters in Villa's favour. Instead, the hosts surrendered their advantage almost immediately.
According to Shearer's analysis on BBC's Match of the Day, the problem extended beyond one individual mistake. Villa's defenders and midfielders must coordinate their movements better when opponents launch quick attacks.

Emery needs to address Villa's defensive concentration without sacrificing the attacking intent that makes his team dangerous.
Cash must track runners instead of following the ball, while Gomes needs to recognise when his full-back requires support. Those adjustments sound basic, but Premier League opponents punish even brief lapses.
Villa's attacking players can create chances and change matches, yet their work loses value when the team cannot protect a lead for two minutes. Emery should demand sharper communication, quicker reactions and greater discipline during transitions.
For a side chasing European qualification, these dropped points carry real significance. Villa didn't need a complete tactical overhaul against Brentford; they needed their players to stay switched on after scoring. Shearer's criticism exposed precisely that failure.
