The Houston Astros wasted no time addressing their battered bullpen following a humiliating 12-4 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday night at Daikin Park, announcing two roster moves Saturday: the reinstatement of left-handed reliever Bennett Sousa from the 15-day injured list and the corresponding option of left-hander Colton Gordon back to Triple-A Sugar Land.
The Yankees needed little help in dismantling Houston on Friday. New York slugged four home runs, courtesy of Jazz Chisholm Jr. , Ryan McMahon , Ben Rice , and José Abreu , and went 7-for-12 with runners in scoring position to cruise to a 12-4 victory, extending their winning streak to seven games. For the Astros, it was their fifth straight home loss, dropping them to a troubling 10-17 on the season, last place in the AL West.
Gordon got most of the blame. The 27-year-old UCF product had been called back up from Triple-A on April 13 after posting a 1.76 ERA over three starts with Sugar Land, but his performance in the big leagues was a complete disaster. Gordon gave up 12 earned runs in just 9.1 innings over four games since his promotion, giving him an ERA of 11.57. The Astros couldn't afford to keep that kind of inconsistency in a bullpen that was already stretched thin by injuries.
Sousa's return is a big improvement. The 31-year-old left-handed pitcher missed the start of the 2026 season because he hurt his left oblique in his last spring training game against the Nationals. However, he has been doing well in his rehab work, with a great 9:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in three minor league games over 3.2 shutout innings.
He is one of Houston's most dependable relievers because of what he has done in the past. In 2025, Sousa played in 44 games and had a 2.84 ERA. He kept left-handed hitters to a .145 average and a .433 OPS. Josh Hader , the closer, is also on the IL with a biceps problem, so Sousa could quickly become Houston's main high-leverage lefty and get save chances. The Astros really need him to be that way; Friday night showed that this bullpen can't take another disaster.
