Astros Close Out New York Trip With Series Win Over Mets

The Astros may be barely above .500, but they were able to take four out of six during their New York trip.

Jeremy Peña kicked things off nice and strong for the Astros, crushing a solo home run on the third pitch of the game to put the Astros on the board early. Thornton did follow that up with back-to-back strikeouts, and then the Mets answered right back in the bottom of the first.
Francisco Lindor led off with a home run off Pecko, and Juan Soto followed on the very next pitch with a solo shot of his own.
Although he gave up those two early home runs, Pecko settled in and gave the Astros length, five solid innings. Something they desperately need with their thinning staff. It is starting to look like a real possibility for Pecko to become a reliable arm in their rotation.
Pecko didn't allow another baserunner until the fifth. That's when things briefly slipped away: an error put a Mets runner on, Pecko walked the next two batters to load the bases, and Luis Torrens grounded into a run-scoring double play that gave the Mets a brief 3-2 lead.

Then, LaMonte Wade Jr., pinch-hitting for Cam Smith, came in and set things straight for the Astros. He delivered the biggest swing of the night, a two-run homer off Jonathan Pintaro that bounced off the second deck and gave the Astros the lead back, 4-3. Wade's homer was his third career pinch-hit shot and his first since April 2025, back when he was still with San Francisco. Peña finished with two RBIs on the night, and he's now matched last season's home run total, in far fewer at-bats.
Things fell apart further for the Mets in the seventh. Isaac Paredes scored on a Daulton Varsho bases-loaded groundout, and Jose Altuve came around separately when Jared Young threw wide of the plate, making it 6-3.
Josh Hader came in to close things out, his 21st save of the season.
The Astros are just barely holding on but were able to secure back-to-back series wins in the Big Apple, and they remain two games ahead of Texas in the AL West. They now make their way home to face the Chicago White Sox.
