Astros Look to Regain Control of Series Behind Arrighetti in Boston

The Houston Astros kicked off their series with the Red Sox on Friday in Boston , and after coming off a strong win, a 3-1 loss wasn’t the response they were looking for.

It’s a different version of this Astros team than the one Boston saw earlier this season. During their seven-game season-opening homestand, Houston swept the Red Sox and looked poised to carry that momentum into 2026. However, things quickly took a turn, and the road hasn’t been kind to Houston since.

That being said, the Astros have still shown flashes of the team they can be, and when they’re at their best, they’re dangerous, often with it starting on the mound. When the pitching is locked in, Houston looks like a completely different club.

With Spencer Arrighetti starting the second game of the series, the Astros will once again lean on their most reliable arm to try to regain control of the series.

Amid countless pitching struggles, Arrighetti has been a rare bright spot in an increasingly thin rotation. With all of the promising arms Houston entered the season with, it’s the former Triple-A starter who has emerged as the anchor of the staff. Others, like Lance McCullers Jr. and Peter Lambert , have delivered strong outings, but Arrighetti has been the most consistent option, and that’s exactly what this team needs right now.

The difference for Arrighetti has been his ability to command the strike zone. By limiting walks and consistently missing bats, he’s been able to keep opposing lineups from building momentum.

Once reinforcements like Hunter Brown return from the injured list, there’s reason to believe things could stabilize. But for now, Arrighetti remains the tone-setter every time he takes the mound for Houston.

Strong pitching certainly helps, but it can’t win a game or series alone, so here are a few other things to look out for.

One of the biggest factors for Houston will be the middle of the order. If Yordan Alvarez continues to swing a hot bat, it changes how opposing pitchers attack the lineup. With Isaac Paredes hitting behind him, Houston has seen more consistent production in key spots, as pitchers are forced to challenge Alvarez rather than pitch around him. For the Astros, sustained offense will likely come down to whether that stretch of the lineup can capitalize on those opportunities.

For Houston, it continues to come back to execution on the mound and timely hitting. With Arrighetti setting the tone, the Astros will look to turn flashes into a complete performance in Boston.
