The Houston Astros are currently involved in a three-team battle for control of the AL West division. Following their 5-1 win over the New York Yankees on Thursday, the Astros moved to 67-67 on the season, which is enough to lead the division by one game over the Texas Rangers for now. But Houston, of all teams, would know that they will need all the help they can get to avoid a repeat of last year's disappointment.
To that end, they might be getting some reinforcements on the starting pitching front very soon. According to the latest injury update on MLB.com, starting pitcher Mike Burrows could return to the Astros when the calendar flips to September after having made three rehab starts down in Triple-A.
In Triple-A, Burrows pitched in three games (13.1 innings) and allowed three runs on 11 hits and five walks while striking out a total of 15 batters. His stuff was at least sharp, although he can stand to be more in command of his pitches.

Burrows last pitched for the team on the sixth of July, when he allowed seven earned runs in a 12-11 loss to the Washington Nationals . 2026 hasn't been the best of years for the 26-year-old, as he is sporting an unsightly ERA of 5.99 in 94.2 innings this season.
Nonetheless, the Astros know of Burrows' talent , and he can certainly help the team for this stretch run. Last season, Burrows posted an ERA of 3.92 in 19 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates , and perhaps now that he's distanced himself more from the right elbow neuritis that's been keeping him out of action, he could make the sort of impact the team needs him to.
Last year, the Astros lost steam towards the end of the season and they allowed the Seattle Mariners to take the division lead. They ended up missing the postseason altogether after losing the tiebreaker to the Detroit Tigers . They most certainly do not want a repeat of this.
