Astros vs Athletics MLB Betting Preview
Houston sends Hayden Wesneski to the mound in what's expected to be his final regular-season start, capping an encouraging return from the Tommy John surgery that cost him the back half of 2025.

Across 10 starts since coming back, Wesneski has been genuinely effective, going 5-2 with a 3.50 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP over 54 innings, and he's been especially sharp lately, allowing one earned run or fewer in four of his last six outings.
He's also already faced this exact Athletics club once this season, throwing five scoreless innings and striking out four while allowing just one hit.
The Athletics counter with Jacob Lopez, who's had a rough year at 6-5 with a 5.68 ERA.
Wesneski's strikeout profile points squarely toward the under. His 41 strikeouts across 10 starts this season work out to right around four per outing on average, and his lone previous look at Oakland's lineup this year produced exactly that — four strikeouts over five scoreless innings.

He's built his success this season on soft contact and command rather than swing-and-miss dominance, a profile that tends to cap strikeout totals even on nights when the results are excellent, and there's no indication the Astros plan to push him deep into this final tune-up start given his workload restrictions coming off a major elbow surgery.
With a track record of living right around four strikeouts a start, a recent head-to-head result against this same Athletics lineup that landed right at that number, and a start that projects as more of a controlled final tune-up than a stretch-it-out outing, the under carries real value at this price.
Pick: Hayden Wesneski Under 4.5 Strikeouts (-135, bet365)
