Athletics trade Colby Thomas to Phillies for former first-round pick originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
A slew of injuries affected what moves the Athletics could make ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline, but general manager David Forst was able to sneak in one move before Monday's 3 p.m. PT cutoff.
The A's sent outfielder Colby Thomas to the Philadelphia Phillies for right-handed pitcher Seth Johnson . The Athletic's Jayson Stark was first to report the trade Monday.
Thomas, 25, was the Athletics ' No. 3 prospect in 2025, per MLB Pipeline , but he has been rather lackluster during his time in the majors. In 104 games across the last two seasons, the former third-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft accrued a slash line of .214/.252/.376 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI.
The A's previously had optioned Thomas to Triple-A Las Vegas on July 31.
Meanwhile, Johnson is a former first-round pick by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2019. The 27-year-old has made 27 career MLB appearances since his debut in 2024, posting a 7.18 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings.
Though Johnson's numbers in the big leagues haven't been great, he does have a 2.17 ERA with six saves in 29 innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He likely will be tasked with helping out an Athletics' bullpen that has struggled mightily in recent weeks.
