Zuby Ejiofor enters his rookie season with an opportunity to turn his energy and versatility into meaningful minutes for the Atlanta Hawks.
Frontcourt injuries have created an opening. Henri Veesaar is expected to miss the entire season after tearing his right ACL, while Mouhamed Gueye is recovering from a fractured left foot. Their absences leave Atlanta with fewer options behind Onyeka Okongwu and give Ejiofor a chance to establish himself early.

That opportunity comes with competition. Jock Landale provides an experienced option at center, while Asa Newell will also be pushing for playing time. Gueye's eventual return would add another player to the mix, making it important for Ejiofor to show how his particular strengths can help the rotation.
His motor is a good place to start. Ejiofor plays with physicality, pursues opportunities around the basket and brings the kind of effort that can change the energy of a possession. Those qualities have already helped him connect with fans eager to see what he can contribute.
Finishing at the rim gives him a straightforward way to impact the offense. He can make himself useful by running the floor, presenting a target near the basket and converting chances created by Atlanta's ball handlers. For a rookie competing for minutes, contributing without needing plays called for him is valuable.
The more intriguing part of his offensive outlook is his potential beyond those finishes. Ejiofor has shown flashes of perimeter shooting and the ability to find teammates. His passing could help keep possessions moving, particularly when a defense collapses toward him and leaves another Hawk available.
His outside shot should be viewed as a developing tool. If opponents eventually have to respect it, he would give Quin Snyder additional flexibility when assembling frontcourt combinations. For now, making quick decisions and playing within the offense should matter more than forcing attempts.

Those attributes could make Ejiofor useful at center when Snyder wants a smaller lineup. However, earning that responsibility requires more than offensive promise. He will need to learn Atlanta's defensive coverages, hold his positioning and help finish possessions with rebounds.
Realistically, his rookie season could also include time with the College Park Skyhawks. If Atlanta's available frontcourt players stay healthy, regular G-League minutes would give him opportunities to develop his shooting, passing and defensive reads rather than spending extended stretches outside the rotation.
That would still serve the Hawks' larger goal. Ejiofor provides depth now, but his value can grow as he becomes more comfortable in Snyder's system. Whether he eventually plays behind Okongwu or earns opportunities alongside him, this season is about building trust—and making sure Atlanta can rely on him when his number is called.
