Atlanta United will face FC Cincinnati this Saturday, October 10, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will air globally on Apple TV. Fans can also listen on Fox Sports 1360 or La Mega 101.5 FM from Cincinnati. Former Atlanta Journal-Constitution writer Doug Roberson joins the conversation to discuss the team's season and their path to the MLS Cup playoffs.
The road to the playoffs feels like a long climb for both teams. FC Cincinnati started the 2026 season with a win over Atlanta United, but things have changed since then. According to the podcast "Soccer With Doug," both squads have struggled to match the high standards they set in years past. The Cincinnati defense has shown weakness, and Atlanta has tried many offensive ideas without seeing the results they want.
It is a strange feeling for fans who remember the glory days under Tata Martino. The summer transfer window might hold the key to fixing these issues now that all the pieces are finally in play. Doug Roberson, a former writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, offers his take on how the Five Stripes are doing. He asks if Atlanta can get back the success from Martino's first time as coach.
The team is trying to see if new players fit well around Miguel Almiron for the postseason. This is not just a game; it is a test of whether the roster can handle the pressure. If the defense does not tighten up and the offense finds a rhythm, the dream of a deep playoff run could fade fast. The fans are watching closely to see if the changes made in the summer will pay off when it counts most.
While the older stars get the headlines, the future is already here for Atlanta United. Elías Báez, a 21-year-old fullback from Argentina, has become a mainstay in the starting lineup. He arrived last winter to forge a new path in his career, leaving everything he knew in Buenos Aires behind. Just 10 months later, he is improving with every match and helping the team find its footing.
Báez admits he still misses Argentina, especially the food. He said the empanadas and Milanese are what he misses the most. For this squad, he observed that asados now happen regularly. When asked who the best grill masters are among the staff, he pointed to Manu Alfaro and Dami Silvero. It is these small moments of home that help a young player settle into a new country.
On the field, Báez is adapting to the style of play in the United States. He believes that gradually adapting to the new country will help him grow personally as a player. He joined the squad around the same time as two other Argentinians, Tomás Jacob and Lucas Hoyos. Their presence has been crucial for him personally and as a player. Báez says he trusts Lucas Hoyos and Tomás Jacob to help him navigate this new chapter.
Beyond soccer, Báez is finding his spots around town. He likes the area where the stadium is and finds Marietta and Truist Park to be lovely. He has found favorite restaurants like Mambo and Yeppa. His favorite TV show is the series Peaky Blinders, which he says was the absolute best for him. These details show a young man building a life, not just playing a sport. He even has a nickname from his childhood, "Pelado," because he was bald, but now the guys call him Elly.
