Atticus Sappington wins Ducks Wire Player of the Game vs. Washington

It wasn’t pretty by any means, and Dan Lanning will certainly have a ton of things he wants to improve on, but the Oregon Ducks handled business this week like they were supposed to. The Washington Huskies didn’t pose much of a threat offensively, but their defense made it tough for the Ducks to put the ball in the end zone, which resulted in this low-scoring affair.

It’s normally tough to think of someone who stood out during such a messy game, but it was surprisingly easy this time. Kicker Atticus Sappington will take home Ducks Wire Player of the Game honors for the second time this season after an inspired performance today.

He was called on four times to extend Oregon’s lead and he delivered each time. One could argue that he was the biggest part of the Ducks’ offense today with all of his contributions, but especially his career-long 51-yard field goal that put the Ducks up by 12 points at the time.

Oregon will now be heading to the College Football Playoff, and Sappington can rest easy knowing he played a huge part. Without his contributions today and his game-winning field goal against the Iowa Hawkeyes a few weeks ago, there’s a chance the Ducks would not be in this position right now.
