The New York Yankees finished off a sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 7-0 win on Wednesday night. The offense came alive at Kauffman Stadium, and the Bombers picked up some much-needed wins in the AL East race. When the Yankees had the bases loaded in the 7th inning, a fan gave Aaron Judge the recommendation to bunt . Well, did he?
Yankees designated hitter Ben Rice was at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs when Judge stepped into the on-deck circle. A fan took it upon himself to recommend the bunt. "Aaron, you have to bunt here. Hard bunt. Hard bunt here. They're not expecting it."
Rice singled in this at-bat, scoring two runs to give the Yankees a 5-0 lead. That brought Judge up with runners on the corners and two outs, but he did not follow the bunting advice. Judge flew out to center to end the inning.
The Yankees were struggling offensively before taking on the Royals, and Judge's poor play was a big reason why. In the 14 games between May 8 and May 22, Judge hit .176 and posted a dreadful .586 OPS. He hit just one homer in that stretch, and that was also the only RBI he recorded in those games. It's of no surprise that the Yankees went 4-10 in that stretch.
Then, Judge came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. He smoked a walk-off, two-run homer to start a hot stretch for him and the offense. The Bombers came back to beat KC in Game 1, scored 15 runs in a historic offensive effort in Game 2, and ran to a 7-0 win on Wednesday.
The Yankees hope that the Royals series means great things moving forward for their offense. That likely won't mean any bunts for Judge, no matter how much this fan wants him to.
