There is probably no position in sports more unforgiving than quarterback.
You can do almost everything right. You can show up early, stay late, learn the offense, earn the respect of your teammates, develop physically, become a better leader and genuinely be good enough to start at a lot of programs across the country.
And still be the backup.
That appears to be where Austin Mack finds himself as Alabama prepares for the 2026 season.
Keelon Russell has emerged as Alabama's starting quarterback, and naturally, most of the attention is going to surround him. That is what happens when you win the quarterback job at Alabama. Russell is tremendously talented, and there are plenty of reasons to be excited about what he could become in Tuscaloosa.
But Alabama fans should be careful not to turn Russell winning the job into a statement that Austin Mack somehow lost his value.
Those are two very different things.
Austin Mack can be Alabama's backup quarterback and still be a really good quarterback. Actually, both things can be true at exactly the same time.
And Alabama of all programs should understand that better than almost anyone. Because we have seen this story before.
Jalen Hurts knows exactly what it feels like to go from being the guy to standing on the sideline waiting for another opportunity. He also showed the entire college football world what can happen when a quarterback refuses to let a depth chart determine his attitude, his character or ultimately his future.
That is why Mack's story should not be viewed as some sort of failure.
It may just be entering a different chapter.
Quarterback competitions are difficult because there really can only be one QB1.
An offensive line can rotate players. Defensive linemen rotate constantly. Wide receivers can play four, five or six guys throughout a game. Running backs share carries. Defensive backs find different packages.
But quarterback is different.
One player usually gets the football. One player hears his name announced with the starters. One player gets the photographs, headlines, television graphics and attention.
The other guy waits. And waiting is hard.
Especially when you believe in yourself. Especially when you have worked for the opportunity. Especially when you are talented enough to know you could probably play somewhere else.
That is where Mack deserves some respect.
His situation is not an indictment of his ability. It is a reminder of just how talented Alabama's quarterback room has become.
Mack came to Alabama with a relationship already established with Kalen DeBoer from their time together at Washington. He understands this offensive system. He has the size, arm talent and experience within the structure of the offense to be a legitimate quarterback.
At 6-foot-6 and around 235 pounds, Mack certainly looks the part.
He has tremendous physical tools. He has spent years learning. He has developed. And by all indications, he pushed Russell during this competition.
That matters.
Sometimes we have this tendency as sports fans to believe every quarterback competition has to produce one winner and one loser.
It does not.
Russell winning Alabama's starting job does not suddenly mean Mack is bad. It means Russell earned the opportunity.
There is a difference.
And depending on what happens over the course of a college football season, Alabama may eventually need Austin Mack in a very significant way.
That is simply the reality of football.
Quarterbacks get injured. Players struggle. Games get chaotic. Seasons rarely unfold exactly the way everyone expects them to in August.
The backup quarterback can feel irrelevant right up until the exact second he becomes the most important person in the stadium.
That is another lesson Alabama has already learned. Think about Jalen Hurts .
It is easy to remember Hurts now as the NFL star, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and one of the most recognizable former Alabama players of the modern era.
But his Alabama journey was far more complicated than that.
Hurts arrived in Tuscaloosa and became a star almost immediately. As a true freshman in 2016, he took control of Alabama's offense and helped lead the Crimson Tide all the way to the national championship game.
He won SEC Offensive Player of the Year. He helped Alabama win championships. He became one of the faces of the program. Then everything changed.
During the 2018 national championship game against Georgia, Alabama's offense struggled in the first half. Nick Saban made one of the boldest decisions in college football history when he turned to freshman Tua Tagovailoa .
We all know what happened next.
Tagovailoa led Alabama back. Second-and-26 happened. Alabama won another national championship. And suddenly, Hurts' future became one of the biggest stories in college football.
Think about what that had to feel like.
Hurts had lost only a couple of games as Alabama's starting quarterback. He had won the SEC. He had taken Alabama to consecutive national championship games. He had given everything he had to the program.
Then another quarterback became the hero.
Hurts could have left. Nobody would have blamed him. He could have transferred immediately and found another program willing to hand him the keys to the offense.
Instead, he stayed. He competed. And when Tagovailoa ultimately won the starting job in 2018, Hurts stayed anyway.
That decision told us everything we needed to know about him. It would have been understandable for Hurts to become bitter. It would have been understandable for him to disengage. It would have been understandable for him to spend the season thinking about himself.
He did not. He kept working. He kept learning. He kept supporting his teammates. And most importantly, he stayed ready.
Then came the SEC Championship Game. Alabama was once again playing Georgia.
Tagovailoa was injured. Suddenly, Alabama needed its backup quarterback. Suddenly, the player who had spent an entire season waiting was being asked to save Alabama's championship hopes.
Hurts entered the game. And he delivered. He threw the game-tying touchdown pass. Then he ran for the game-winning touchdown. Alabama won the SEC championship.
It remains one of the most beautiful full-circle moments I have ever watched in sports.
A year earlier, Hurts had been replaced against Georgia.
A year later, he replaced Tagovailoa against Georgia and became the hero.
That moment does not happen if Hurts checks out mentally. It does not happen if he spends the season angry. It does not happen if he stops preparing because he is not starting. It happens because Jalen Hurts understood something that athletes sometimes spend years learning:
Being the backup today does not mean you will not be needed tomorrow.
That lesson matters when talking about Austin Mack.
No, the situations are not identical. Hurts had already accomplished tremendous things at Alabama before becoming the backup. Mack has not had that same opportunity yet.
But the principle remains.
Your place on a depth chart does not determine your potential. Your response to disappointment might determine what happens next.
Mack now has a choice. He can view being QB2 as a rejection. Or he can view it as preparation.
He can spend the year thinking about the opportunity he did not receive. Or he can prepare relentlessly for the opportunity that might still come.
Because nobody knows what this season will bring.
Keelon Russell could be spectacular. I think Alabama fans should be genuinely excited about him. His talent is obvious. His ceiling is incredibly high. If he develops the way Alabama believes he can, Russell has the ability to become one of the most exciting quarterbacks in college football.
But Alabama having a talented starter does not make having a talented backup any less important.
In fact, championship teams usually need depth at quarterback more than anybody realizes.
One play can change everything. One awkward hit. One rolled ankle. One helmet to the turf. One bad quarter. One moment when a young quarterback becomes overwhelmed by the pressure.
Then the headset comes off. The backup starts throwing. The stadium gets loud. And suddenly everybody who ignored QB2 all season is desperately hoping he is prepared.
That is why Austin Mack matters.
He matters even if he does not start Week 1. He matters even if Russell plays incredibly well. He matters because football seasons are long, unpredictable and brutal. And Alabama needs more than one quarterback it believes can win football games.
There is also something larger here.
We live in a college football era where transferring has become incredibly easy. Sometimes transferring absolutely makes sense. Players deserve opportunities. Quarterbacks especially only have so many seasons to play. There should not automatically be criticism directed toward somebody who decides the best thing for his career is finding another program.
Hurts eventually did exactly that.
After staying through the 2018 season, he transferred to Oklahoma, became a Heisman Trophy finalist and led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff.
His patience did not prevent him from eventually pursuing his own opportunity. That is what makes Hurts' story so powerful.
Staying does not mean surrendering your dreams. Waiting does not mean giving up. Supporting someone else does not mean you stop believing in yourself.
Hurts stayed when Alabama needed him.
He learned. He matured. He prepared. Then when his opportunity came, he took advantage of it.
Eventually, another opportunity came at Oklahoma. Then another came in the NFL.
The backup quarterback at Alabama became an NFL superstar.
Life can change quickly. Football can change even faster.
Austin Mack's story has not been written yet.
That needs to be emphasized.
He is still young. He is still developing. He is still talented. And he is still one snap away from potentially being asked to lead Alabama's offense.
There is no shame in losing a quarterback competition to another extremely talented quarterback.
Sometimes the other guy is simply ready. Sometimes coaches see something. Sometimes offensive chemistry matters. Sometimes one player edges another player by the smallest margin imaginable. But how Mack responds now may tell us more about him than winning the competition ever could.
Anybody can be enthusiastic when everything goes their way.
Character gets revealed when it does not.
Can you still prepare? Can you still encourage the teammate who beat you? Can you still walk into meetings determined to learn? Can you still practice like you are starting? Can you keep believing your moment is coming when nobody can promise that it is?
Those are difficult questions. Jalen Hurts answered them. And Alabama became better because of it.
There is another side of the Hurts comparison that I think is important.
Hurts did not become Jalen Hurts because everything happened perfectly. He became Jalen Hurts partly because things did not. He experienced disappointment. He experienced being replaced. He experienced people questioning whether he could throw the football well enough to become an elite quarterback. He experienced being the backup.
Then he went to work. He developed as a passer. He grew mentally. He became tougher. Eventually, he became one of the best quarterbacks in college football at Oklahoma and then developed into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
Sometimes adversity develops players in ways immediate success cannot.
Maybe Mack's path is not the one he originally imagined.
That does not mean it cannot become something special. Maybe he spends this season learning. Maybe he gets meaningful snaps. Maybe Alabama needs him in October or November. Maybe he eventually wins the job. Maybe he ultimately decides another opportunity is best for him.
Nobody knows.
But we need to stop treating QB2 like some career obituary.
It isn't. Especially at Alabama.
There is value in being inside that quarterback room. There is value in learning under DeBoer, Ryan Grubb and Bryan Ellis. There is value in practicing against Alabama's defense. There is value in preparing every week like the starter even when nobody outside the building expects you to play. And there is value in learning how to handle disappointment without allowing disappointment to handle you.
That lesson goes beyond football.
Everybody loves stories about instant success.
Five-star recruit arrives. Wins the job. Becomes a star. Wins championships. Goes to the NFL.
But real life rarely works in a straight line.
Sometimes you work incredibly hard and somebody else gets chosen. Sometimes you are qualified and still hear no. Sometimes the opportunity you thought belonged to you goes to someone else.
What happens next matters. That is where Austin Mack is now. And personally, I am still excited about him.
I am excited Alabama has a quarterback as talented as Mack sitting behind Russell. I am excited Alabama has competition. I am excited Alabama has options. Most importantly, I hope Mack understands that being named the backup does not mean Alabama does not believe in him.
You do not have to tear down one quarterback to celebrate another.
Russell can be QB1. Mack can still be really good. Both statements can coexist.
And if history has taught Alabama anything, it should be this: Never forget about the backup quarterback.
Jalen Hurts stood on that sideline.
He waited. He watched. He prepared. And then Alabama needed him. When his number was called, he was ready. That SEC Championship Game became one of the defining moments of his Alabama career, not because everything had gone according to plan, but because it had not.
That is what made it special.
Hurts could not control whether he started. He could control whether he was prepared.
Austin Mack cannot control everything that happens from here either.
He can control how he responds. He can learn. He can develop. He can compete. He can lead. He can support Russell while still believing completely in his own ability. And he can stay ready.
Because opportunity is strange. Sometimes it comes exactly when you expect it. Sometimes it comes a year later. Sometimes it comes at another school. And sometimes it comes in the fourth quarter of the SEC Championship Game when nobody in America expected to see you.
That is football.
That is life. The depth chart may say Austin Mack is Alabama's backup quarterback.
It does not say he is a bad quarterback. It does not say his Alabama career is over. It does not say he will never become QB1. And it certainly does not tell us how his story ends.
It simply tells us where he stands today. Jalen Hurts once stood there too.
Then he kept working. He kept learning. He got his opportunity. And when it came, he made sure everyone remembered his name.
Austin Mack's opportunity may still be coming.
Until then, the job is simple.
Stay. Learn. Compete. Prepare.
And be ready when Alabama calls your number.
Roll Tide.
