- Auston Matthews explains why Maple Leafs’ locker room is ‘so much fun’ right now
The Toronto Maple Leafs are enjoying a strong run of results, and captain Auston Matthews thinks the atmosphere inside the locker room is helping drive their success in early 2026-27 NHL season. Toronto has won four consecutive games, including Saturday's impressive 7-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers .
Matthews said the team's competitive spirit and strong relationships have created an enjoyable environment. Players are pushing each other while keeping things relaxed away from the ice.

"The locker room, day in and day out, it's been great. The environment is just so much fun," Matthews said. "It's competitive. Guys are – a lot of joking around and a lot of chirping at each other. It's just a lot of fun.
"I think that emotion and that energy carries over to the game."

The captain also emphasized that the team's collective mindset matters more than individual achievements.
"It doesn't matter who scores, everybody is excited," Matthews said. "Everything is about the team, and that's what's most important and what's driving us right now."
That approach has produced encouraging results for Toronto. After an inconsistent start to the 2026-27 season, the Maple Leafs have found their rhythm with balanced scoring and improved performances across the lineup.

Goaltender Anthony Stolarz has also noticed the positive atmosphere surrounding the team. He credited the younger players with bringing fresh energy into the locker room.
" The vibes are great . We've got a great group, and the influx of kids brings a lot of energy," Stolarz said. "They're bringing out the best in everyone."
Stolarz added that the group is developing strong chemistry as the season progresses. His comments support Matthews' belief that the team's culture is becoming an important part of its success.

"It's an exciting time to be a Maple Leaf, and the team is gelling really well," Stolarz said.
Toronto's latest victory showcased that collective approach. William Nylander scored twice to reach 300 career NHL goals, while Matthews, Jack Roslovic, Troy Stecher, Zack MacEwen and Vinni Lettieri also scored.
Stolarz stopped 30 shots as the Maple Leafs overwhelmed Edmonton. Leon Draisaitl scored twice for the Oilers, but Toronto's depth proved decisive.
