The Colorado Avalanche are down 2-0 in the Western Conference Final against the Vegas Golden Knights . They lost both games at home without their superstar defenseman, and still don’t know if they are getting him back. Avalanche superstar Cale Makar has not played against the Golden Knights due to an undisclosed injury. Head coach Jared Bednar won’t reveal Makar’s status, according to Sportsnet’s Eric Francis.
“Jared Bednar said ‘you’ll have to wait and see,’ when asked if Makar was playing tonight. Wouldn’t comment on his starting goalie. Said Josh Manson is good to go,” Francis reported.
Makar played all five games against the Minnesota Wild , but was not himself. With only one assist in nine games so far in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, his injury is impacting the Avalanche on both sides of the ice. Without him, the Golden Knights were able to storm to a Game 1 win and mount a comeback in the third period of Game 2.
The Avalanche won the Presidents’ Trophy this season, denoting the best record in the league at the end of the regular season. The Stanley Cup Champion has not been the Presidents’ Trophy winner since 2013. Through the first two rounds, the Avalanche looked like they would cruise to the Stanley Cup Final. But they have hit the skids, with Makar’s injury looming over their series deficit.
Makar is one of the reasons why the Avalanche have had as much success as they have in recent years. He is one of two players ever to be a Norris Trophy finalist in five of his first six seasons, joining Bobby Orr. He won the 2022 Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP when Colorado won the Cup at just 24 years old. He is one of the best players in the world and without him, Colorado is a very different team.
Game 3 of Avalanche vs Golden Knights starts at 6 p.m. Mountain time on Sunday.
