On Sunday evening, the New York Yankees dropped their second straight game to lose the Subway Series against the crosstown rival New York Mets , falling by a score of 7-6 in ten innings. The Yankees led this game 6-3 heading into the ninth inning, but ultimately fell apart from there, allowing the Mets to send the game into extras and then losing on a comically bad play in which two outfielders collided.
Less than two weeks ago, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was singing the praises of his bullpen, saying that " "I think they're just better than everyone thinks," per Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.
However, now, Phillips has outlined how things have gone downhill severely since those comments.
"Since Boone's May 5 comment, the #Yankees' bullpen has been charged with 4 losses & blown saves. Over that span, it's also… 15th in xERA (3.54), 17th in WHIP (1.29), 18th in fWAR (0.2) & AVG (.232), 19th in ERA (4.04) & FIP (4.10), 22nd in R (24), 26th in HR (6)," noted Phillips on X, formerly Twitter. "…The pen's overall numbers are better, but the leverage issue has been a season-long problem (NYY ranks 26th)."
The Yankees' bullpen was thought to be a strength of the team heading into this season, but over the last few weeks, the opposite has unfolded. New York still sits at a respectable 28-19 on the season, but it's certainly possible that they could look to make an upgrade if the struggles continue.
"…the Bombers may need to attempt an overhaul ahead of the trade deadline once again," reported Phillips.
In any case, up next for the Yankees is a series against the Toronto Blue Jays , the team that beat them in four games in last year's AL divisional series.
