The Baltimore Orioles made a stunning move at the 2026 trade deadline, shipping catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a package headlined by prospect Anthony Eyanson.
It was the kind of deal that signals a franchise is in transition, and it immediately raised a question the organization has not had to answer until now: is Gunnar Henderson next?

No deal has been announced and nothing has been confirmed. But the Rutschman trade changed the way other clubs see the organization, and Henderson is the obvious name that follows.
Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner admitted there is a world where the Orioles decide to move on. "When you trade Adley Rutschman you open the door and say everyone is moveable for a price... if they think Gunnar isn't going to stick around or you're not willing to pay what it will cost for him to stick around maybe they do look to move him," Kostka said .
That uncertainty around Henderson's future is not new. The Orioles sat down with him during spring training in an attempt to work out a long-term extension, with ownership involved in the process. Nothing came of it. Henderson enters free agency after 2028 with no extension in place, and the longer that goes unresolved, the more the trade question gains traction.
Henderson appeared in 158 games and hit .226 with a .309 on-base percentage, .715 OPS, 24 home runs and 59 RBIs. He took a big step backwards. He owns a career .259 average, 110 home runs and 24.4 WAR across parts of five seasons along with multiple top-10 AL MVP finishes. He is still only 25 years old.

The Orioles finished 79-82 in 2026, fourth in the AL East. They missed the postseason for the second straight year, which adds pressure on the front office to be honest about where this team actually is.
A shortstop with his power, age and track record could bring back a huge prospect package, and the Rutschman return showed the front office is willing to add talent at the lower levels for the right price.
If the organization does not believe it can sign Henderson before 2029, getting value now starts to make more sense than letting him walk for nothing.
Baltimore is not actively shopping him. But the Rutschman deal removed any assumption that the core is untouchable. Henderson's name is going to come up all winter, and how the Orioles handle those conversations will tell you everything about where this team is headed.
