Baltimore Orioles Produce Polar Opposite Pitching Performances in Thursday’s Doubleheader

Baltimore Orioles Produce Polar Opposite Pitching Performances in Thursday’s Doubleheader

The Baltimore Orioles simultaneously won their series against the Houston Astros while also ending the day on a sour note on Thursday. After winning Tuesday's matchup 5-3, they won Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader 10-3 before losing Game 2 11-5. Game 2 was a makeup of Wednesday's matchup that got rained out.

Starting pitcher Chris Bassitt had his best outing of the season in Game 1, allowing just one run on seven hits over 6.2 innings to go with seven strikeouts against one walk. The 37-year-old earned his second win of the year and is now 2-2.

Bassitt pitched six scoreless innings before allowing an RBI single to Christian Vazquez in the top of the seventh, which ended his outing. Reliever Rico Garcia then entered and got the final out of the frame, which was a fielder's choice off the bat of Carlos Correa .

Bassitt's performance was much-needed, as he still has a 5.46 ERA on the year even after Thursday's game. Baltimore signed the veteran to a one-year, $18.5 million deal this past offseason, and the club is depending on him to perform more like he has historically. He's 84-67 with a 3.69 ERA over 237 career games (223 starts).

Game 2 was less kind to the Orioles. Starting pitcher Brandon Young allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits over just four innings, with two strikeouts against two walks. The right-hander gave up just three runs across his first two starts of the season, so Thursday was a step back.

The Astros scored five runs in the first inning, as Dustin Harris hit a two-run single before Cam Smith hit a three-run homer. Yordan Alvarez then hit a solo homer in the second before Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker hit RBI singles in the fourth. Harris then hit a sacrifice fly before Yainer Diaz hit an RBi single to give Houston a 10-0 lead.

Thursday wasn't the first time that Young struggled in the big leagues, as he went 1-7 with a 6.24 ERA over 12 starts last season. The right-hander got his first call-up on April 19, 2025 after spending years in the farm system. Baltimore signed him as an undrafted free agent in June 2020, and he's 13-15 with a 3.38 ERA over 74 career appearances (68 starts) in the minors.

The Orioles are now 15-16. Up next is a road trip against the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins , starting with Friday's matchup with the Yankees. The game will start at 7:05 p.m. ET.
