Evan Beerntsen is a Baltimore Raven.
The former Appleton North standout and 2018 graduate was drafted by the Ravens late in the seventh round of the NFL Draft on April 25. He was the 253rd pick overall.
Beerntsen, who played at Northwestern last season as a graduate student, started 13 games for the Wildcats. He earned all-Big Ten honorable mention after allowing zero sacks and quarterback hits. At the NFL combine, he measured 6-foot-3½ and 301 pounds.
Appleton North head football coach Rob Salm said the "entire Appleton North family is incredibly proud of Evan." Beerntsen is the first player from the program to be drafted into the NFL.
"Seeing him reach this lifetime goal after such a long journey is a testament to the special young man he is," Salm said. "We knew he has the fortitude to earn his place and we look forward to seeing him work his butt off to secure a spot on that Ravens roster. It's a great day for our program and our community."
Beerntsen earned first-team all-Valley Football Association honors his senior season at Appleton North in 2018. He redshirted his first year at South Dakota State , then saw action in four games when the Jackrabbits played in the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After a medical redshirt in the fall of 2021 due to a shoulder injury, Beerntsen finally settled in and became a three-year starter in 2022, 2023 and 2024 helping the Jackrabbits to FCS national championships in 2022 and 2023.
The Ravens were 8-9 last season and second in the AFC North. Beerntsen was the final of 11 picks by Baltimore in this draft. He will report to rookie minicamp on Saturday, May 2, at the Ravens training facility in Owings Mills, Maryland.
