The Chicago Bears have more weapons than they can feed right now. That's the best problem any offensive-minded coach can have, and a sharp offensive mind like Ben Johnson's might be going at full steam right now.
That said, the more, the merrier in the Windy City. Just because they're already oozing with talented pass catchers doesn't mean they won't welcome another one to the party, even one who wasn't supposed to be a part of the equation.
Kaden Davis has gone from being an afterthought to not only making a push for the 53-man roster but for an actual role in Ben Johnson's passing game. When asked about him, offensive coordinator Press Taylor was nothing but complimentary of the former UFL standout.
"He's done a great job. And it's like you said, he continues to produce with the opportunities he's been given. You've got to put wins on tape. He had a contested catch on the sideline over there. He had a couple other plays," Taylor said. "He put a lot of good things on tape, and he's continued to do that. So that's really all you can ask for from those guys. They make the most of their opportunities and he's continued to do that. And I think that's why you see more and more opportunities go his way."
Davis carried his strong training camp momentum into the preseason opener, hauling in four receptions for 88 yards. He tormented one of his - many - former teams, the Cleveland Browns , with a 43-yard gainer. He also had a 23-yard punt return.
The Bears are already more than locked in with Luther Burden III , Rome Odunze , and even rookie Zavion Thomas, who will also play special teams. They also have a speedster in Kalif Raymond and a potential superstar in Colston Loveland .
However, playmakers make plays, and it's up to the coaches to get them on the field. Johnson is one of the savviest play designers, and he certainly knows how to scheme his guys open. If Davis keeps showing up, he'll make him look good.
The Bears have the potential to be the most explosive scoring team in the league next season. That's nothing new to Johnson, the architect behind the Detroit Lions ' offensive juggernauts when he was still with the divisional rivals.
Of course, it takes much more than just firepower to thrive in this league, and this team has its fair share of concerns and question marks on the other side of the field. Still, they should love their chances in any potential shootout.
The Bears have a great problem to solve in the next couple of weeks. Davis was supposed to be there as a fringe guy who could only aspire for a spot in the practice squad or to be an injury replacement. Now, don't be shocked if he's one of the first guys off the bench for Caleb Williams' offense.
